Cody Rhodes Shares Latest ‘Winged Eagle’ Tease
WWEAmerican Nightmare Cody Rhodes is hoping to wrap up his storyline in the WrestleMania 39 Main Event.
After winning the Royal Rumble, Rhodes will challenge Roman Reigns for the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship on April 2nd in Los Angeles.
Speculation has surfaced that Rhodes will bring back the iconic “winged eagle” design of the WWE Championship should he emerge victorious at WrestleMania.
Cody opened up about the speculation about a recent appearance on WWE’s The Bump, where he said:
“During my youth, the WWE that I watched was really synonymous with the Winged Eagle. I think there are a lot of people who love the Winged Eagle design, a lot of people like the Big Eagle, but the Winged Eagle suited me. Another reason why today’s design with the giant W is so special is that it’s this walking poster for the promotion.
“It was just a pipe dream. I’m posting this and I don’t want people to think I have a chance, I don’t want people to think I’m starting my own business, the reality is I was able to change the Intercontinental Championship once before, which seemed absurd , and if I make it to the finish line, Greatest WrestleMania Ever, SoFi in Hollywood. If I can make it to the finish line and get my hands on these things, which as I said up until now have alluded to my family, it would just be fun, maybe it’s just a pipe dream, maybe it’s just a thought, a Shimmer, but it would be fun to just say, “Just boil them down and bring back the winged eagle.”
“Now there might be, listen, I’m just talking, I feel like I’m going to go and get a bazillion texts like ‘no, no’. All titles, it’s the sameness in them that makes them special, but just from a design standpoint I just have a lot of love and awe for this title and it’s just a little pipe dream. I had the same dream with the Intercontinental title and I was lucky enough to make it come true, so join us because that’s where the fun begins.”
Cody added even more fuel to the fire today by posting a photo of a Cody Rhodes action figure tossing the current WWE Championship into the fire with the winged eagle slung over his shoulder.
There has been speculation that WWE will split the two world championships after WrestleMania as Triple H seeks to “reset” WWE tokens.
Roman Reigns will return on next week’s episode of SmackDown, likely facing the American Nightmare on the show.
