Djokovic vs Wawrinka LIVE! Wimbledon 2023 result and latest updates from Centre Court
jokovic vs Wawrinka LIVE!
World number two Novak Djokovic continues his quest for a record-breaking eighth Wimbledon title, capping day five at the All England Club by taking on two-time quarter-finalist Stan Wawrinka. It will be the 27th time the two have met but, remarkably, the first time on grass.
Djokovic has won 20 of those duels but lost to Wawrinka in the finals of both the US Open and French Open at the peak of his career before the 38-year-old Swiss struggled through injury. Djokovic is rightly the favorite today but the two still have a lot of respect.
Ahead of the game, Djokovic said: “We mustn’t forget that he’s a three-time Grand Slam champion, Davis Cup winner and also won Olympic gold (in doubles). He’s had a fantastic career.” Can Wawrinka Tonight add another famous memory? Follow all the action from Center Court live with Wimbledon’s Dom Smith below!

GAME, SET AND GAME DJOKOVIC
Djokovic 6-3, 6-1, 7-6(5) Wawrinka
Just as that tie-break begins, a man yells in Wawrinka’s direction, “He’s only human, Stan.”
Amazing performance by Wawrinka, really pushing for the first mini-break but Djokovic takes the first point and then he gets the mini-break himself on Wawrinka’s serve.
Djokovic allowed himself a smile as he took a 3-1 lead when Wawrinka then netted.
But then Wawrinka turns the tide and takes a 5:3 lead.
Then the serve is back when Wawrinka loses the lead and Djokovic equalizes in the most tense tie-break to make it 5-5. Then he devastatingly grabs the ball too early, nets it and offers Djokovic a match point.
Djokovic takes it and punches the air as he reaches the fourth round.
TIEBREAK!
Djokovic 6-3, 6-1, 6-6 Wawrinka
After a dramatic 12th game in the third set we are facing a tie break.
The crowd roared as Djokovic urged Wawrinka to deuce on his serve
On the second deuce, Djokovic misses the ball with a net volley – he just finds the tram lines – and the 38-year-old from Switzerland forced a tie-break.
Djokovic holds (when not?)
Djokovic 6-3, 6-1, 6-5 Wawrinka
Djokovic easily makes it 40-0, but then uses a weak return from Wawrinka to destroy the winning goal.
A love match for Djokovic, who leads 6-5 in this much more competitive third set.
Wawrinka with a brilliant game
Djokovic 6-3, 6-1, 5-5 Wawrinka
Djokovic nets after Wawrinka’s hammered serve and the Swiss veteran leads 30-0.
Beautiful, fine cross-court backhand from Wawrinka to 40:0. Djokovic manages it but doesn’t respond into the game.
It’s 5-5.
What a point
Djokovic 6-3, 6-1, 5-4 Wawrinka
It’s an ace down for Djokovic as he leads 30-15.
He then storms into the net and thus ensures a smooth winning goal. He’s not often at the net, Djokovic, but he was definitely there.
And then WOW. Djokovic points to his ear for a round of applause and Wawrinka is one of the many to meet him on Center Court. A stunning point that included a shot against the net line, a lob and a smashed volley winner.
Djokovic is the winner on serve and if he breaks here he has won the match.
Stan the man
Djokovic 6-3, 6-1, 4-4 Wawrinka
Well well well. Stan the man is not going down without a fight.
He hits the lane with a one-handed backhand but responds with a fiery serve.
A battered winner across the board puts Wawrinka at 40-15, who immediately wins the game with an ace.
Djokovic pushes himself forward again
Djokovic 6-3, 6-1, 4-3 Wawrinka
Cross-court winner for Djokovic, who takes the first two points of the game. He then knocks down Wawrinka’s promised return of serve and then knocks down an ace.
Impressive performance from Djokovic who won Wimbledon last year by beating Nick Kyrgios in the Australian’s only Grand Slam final to date.
3-3
Djokovic 6-3, 6-1, 3-3 Wawrinka
Wawrinka is 30-0 up after firing a brilliant ace into the net. At the very next point, Djokovic gets much closer to Wawrinka’s magnificent shot than the Swiss would have liked, but Djokovic netted.
It’s another important stop for the 38-year-old.
Djokovic holds. Only!
Djokovic 6-3, 6-1, 3-2 Wawrinka
Laughter erupted across Center Court as a cat-and-mouse game ensued, with backhand slices all over the edge of the court. Wawrinka challenges center as one of Djokovic is considered ‘in’ But he’s OUT.
Great call from Wawrinka. Djokovic responds with a convincing winner and is now 40-15 ahead.
Djokovic then scores, leaving Wawrinka one point away from forcing Djokovic’s serve into a deuce.
But Wawrinka can only find the tram lines and Djokovic stops.
Wawrinka holds again
Djokovic 6-3, 6-1, 2-2 Wawrinka
It’s only when Wawrinka takes a 15-0 lead that the Serb can find the tram lines and then move up the lead in that fifth game of the third set.
Wawrinka completes the job with a winner across the board, with Djokovic’s momentum sending him the other way.
Thumbs up approval from the Serb.
