What’s up Doc?
Former White House senior medical adviser Dr. Anthony Fauci emerged from his home on Monday, a day after a bomb report revealed the Department of Energy had concluded COVID-19 likely leaked from a lab in Wuhan, China.
Fauci, who retired in late 2022 after more than five decades as a federal employee, did not comment on the Energy Department’s revised assessment, which was reportedly included in a recent intelligence report sent to the White House by senior members of Congress.
The 82-year-old has repeatedly dismissed the so-called “lab leak” theory, insisting evidence shows the virus passed naturally from animals to humans.
Republicans have argued Fauci dismissed the theory to cover up his former agency’s involvement in funding so-called “gain-of-function” research, in which scientists make viruses more transmissible and harmful.
The Biden administration defended Fauci Monday, and press secretary Karine-Jean-Pierre said the Republican attacks were “counterproductive, they weren’t helpful.”
