obituary
On July 22, 2022, Elva Maude (House) Higgs left this world after 26 years to once again feel the loving embrace of her husband George. Elva had turned 95 on January 28, a birthday commemorated by her own mother’s birthday. She lived in Morden MB where she was impeccably cared for by all her children. Her grandchildren often joked that she had the best “personal grooming.” She died at home, where loving care and support helped her transition from this world to the next.
Elva was born in 1927 to Winnifred and Fred House in Bowsman MB, where she grew up on a farm about 2 miles east of Bowsman. She was surrounded by a family of 2 sisters and 2 brothers where she was the second oldest. Elva often spoke about how her mother and father loved and supported their children and had to endure many hardships as a family. As her parents had immigrated from England, extended family support was scarce during her childhood. Later in life, she became the hardworking matriarch of her own family, being a role model for her own children, extended family children, neighbors, and her community.
She met George Higgs and married in Pioneer Mine BC. There the couple raised 4 daughters together until 1956 when they moved back to Bowsman where they settled on the Higgs family farm. After returning to Bowsman, their son was born in 1961.
Elva and George have been very active with their family in their community. They have been part of community sporting events, local and federal government, and social gatherings. They enjoyed socializing around the kitchen table over coffee and snacks, but also enjoyed communicating with their friends on weekends and traveling to dances in the valley.
Elva was an exceptional cook and was often recruited by catering organizations in Bowsman to take part in the preparation of delicious community meals and was particularly known for her ability to prepare gravies. A fond memory of Elva’s family is going into their kitchen and finding out what’s cooking on the stove or in the oven. Her gardens were beautiful, her yard was impeccably maintained, and she was always willing to share the “magic” she used to create her culinary masterpieces.
In her later years, Elva loved watching hockey, curling and soccer (actually any kind of sport) on TV. She often attended local sporting events to see her great-grandchildren play.
Elva was a person of great character, worthy of admiration by all who knew her. Her life was rooted in love for her children and grandchildren, of whom she was most proud. She was always ready with a hug, a kiss, and pet names like “cute face” for the little ones {and big ones}. She was welcoming, supportive and loving in good times and bad.
As a family we cannot express how much we loved and appreciated this beautiful person. We are grateful to have had such an example of love in our lives for so long.
Elva is survived by her children Carol Schaefer (Jack), Louise Sutherland, Jo Ann Gauthier, Debbie Giesbrecht (Menno) and Chris Higgs (Elizabeth), her 12 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren and 9 great-great-grandchildren. Elva is also survived by her sister, Jean Alexander of Swan River.
Elva is a predeceased of her husband George, sisters Phyllis and Evelyn, brothers Howard and Alexander, parents Winnie and Fred, and son-in-law Richard Gauthier.
Funeral services only will be held at Bowsman Cemetery on Saturday, September 10, 2022 at 2:00 p.m. A light lunch will then be served at Bowsman Legion Hall. Those wishing to make memorial donations in Elva’s honor may do so to the Bowsman Cemetery Association (Box 248, Bowsman, MB R0L 0H0).
