Sports fans have voted for the greatest sporting moments of all time – with the England Lionesses’ victory at Euro 2022 topping the list.

The top 30 moments date back to the first Olympic Games in ancient Greece in 776 BC. to the present day, with the 2022 World Cup in Qatar also making the list.

More than a third of its greatest moments have come in the last decade – with Leicester City winning the Premier League title in 2016, Usain Bolt’s 100m gold medal at the London 2012 Olympics and England’s victory over New Zealand to win his first cricket World championship to win 2019, all in the top five.

Further back in the archives, Roger Bannister breaking the four-minute mile barrier in 1954 and Muhammed Ali’s “Rumble in the Jungle” victory over George Foreman in 1974 both made the top 10 in sports history.

And so did Diego Maradona’s “Hand of God” goal and “Goal of the Century” in the 1986 World Championship final, along with Dennis Taylor beating Steve Davis at the 1985 World Snooker Championship.

The survey of 2,000 sports fans also found that 72% would have liked to have witnessed some of these big moments in person.

The study was commissioned by Visit Anaheim, which works to promote tourism in Anaheim, California as it sponsors both the Los Angeles Angels’ spring training and their minor league baseball team in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Spokesman Jay Burress said: “Most sports fans know the ups and downs that come with supporting a team or an athlete.
