England vs France LIVE rugby: Latest updates from Six Nations clash at Twickenham as Marcus Smith starts, Owen Farrell dropped

England train ahead of France’s visit to the Six Nations

England face an intriguing test of the progress they’ve made under Steve Borthwick as they host France for Le Crunch in Round 4 of the Six Nations at Twickenham.

Borthwick’s side have bounced back well after a disheartening loss to Scotland in the opening round with victories over Italy and Wales, but Fabien Galthie’s France will be a different matter altogether. The reigning Grand Slam champions may have lost to Ireland three weeks ago but are still in contention for the championship and have been one of the top two sides in the world for the last 18 months.

Borthwick made his boldest team-selection call yet, dropping captain Owen Farrell to the bench while Marcus Smith started at left flank instead. Having abandoned the 10-12 Smith-Farrell axis favored by Eddie Jones after that loss to Scotland, Farrell has owned the No 10 shirt but his struggles, particularly off the tee, means the coach is heading into a bold new one direction.

France, meanwhile, keen on a first win at Twickenham under Galthie, welcome injured centre-back Jonathan Danty in place of Yoram Moefana. Francois Cros also replaces the injured Anthony Jelonch in the back row and suspended propsman Mohamed Haouas makes way for Dorian Aldegheri to complete the three changes after beating Scotland last time out.

France showed great confidence yesterday as they got to work in an extensive final training session on the Twickenham pitch. It used to be strangely spring-like in Twickenham, the sun continuing to warm heads already covered in wool at the temperature expected tonight. But the wind and rain that at one point threatened to make this a slightly awkward event has not materialized and both sides are content enough in shorts as they go through their final warm-up.

France disappear into the tunnel first while England huddle together before following their opponents back to the dressing room.

‘Mad Dog’ endorses Ellis Genge for being ‘brilliant England skipper’

Lewis Ludlam has endorsed the promotion of “Mad Dog” Ellis Genge to England captain after recalling a bloody battle against the Bristol prop as a teenager in school rugby.

Genge was handed managerial duties after Owen Farrell was demoted to the bench for the penultimate round of the Guinness Six Nations against France in Twickenham on Saturday.

It completes the fiery 28-year-old’s rise from council housing in Bristol to the pinnacle of English football, and in Ludlam he has a team-mate who will be happy to follow him in ‘Le Crunch’.

“Ellis is a brilliant skipper. He’s playing with his heart on his sleeve,” said Northampton flanker Ludlam. “When he speaks, it’s convincing, people can stand behind him. He’s someone you want to fight for, someone you want to fight for.”
