England vs Italy live score, updates, commentary and highlights from 2023 Six Nations match
England will meet Italy in Twickenham in the second round of the 2023 Six Nations games. Both sides were beaten at home in the opening weekend and England in particular are hoping for a first win for new coach Steve Borthwick.
The Borthwick era began with a loss when Duhan van der Merwe struck a superb late winner to give Scotland their second consecutive win at Twickenham. England came back into play after an early upset in Scotland, Max Malins crossed twice and took the lead early in the second half from an Ellis Genge try. However, two unanswered Scottish tries meant they clinched the Calcutta Cup back to Edinburgh.
Italy lost even narrower in the 29-24 loss to France. Three first-half tries for Les Bleus left Italy plenty to do but the Azzurri struck back. Full-back Ange Capuozzo completed an acrobatics in the corner before a penalty attempt and 12 conceded points from Tommaso Allan gave them an unlikely lead. France faltered but a late try from Matthieu Jalibert put the game back in their hands.
With England still very early in Borthwick’s tenure and Italy a dangerous team, this game could be a potential banana for England. They won 33-0 in Rome at the 2022 tournament, but a ‘routine’ victory seems far less likely this time.
