Every Safe Location in Gloomwood (& How to Open Them)

In a dark Victorian setting, Gloomwood offers stealth-focused FPS gameplay, similar to dishonored in a survival horror world that hides valuable items in safes locked by discoverable codes to give players powerful items to fight against the supernatural forces cursing the land. Inspired by other gothic horror environments like bloodborne‘s Yharnam, the main character of Gloomwood, the Doctor, must navigate hordes of cursed humans known as the infected while traversing the region’s cliffs and caves without falling prey to any monstrosities. Inspired by games like Thief, Gloomwood creates a nuanced approach to stealth, making every move and action of the Doctor impactful as players attempt to tread lightly in enemy encounters.

There may only be three levels available Gloomwood during Early Access, yet everyone is flushed out by the infected with advanced enemy AI that can detect The Doctor through even the slightest change in sound and light. Another shining example of why a Thief reboot should happen Gloomwood recaptures that intensity reminiscent of those titles where players are constantly nervous and wondering if the move they just made was worth the risk. An item called the Light Gem Ring indicates how alert the infected are to the player Gloomwood by color indicators, so players should familiarize themselves with this mechanic when searching for the hidden safes in each level.

Two safes exist on the same level Gloomwood, Croup’s Fishery, the fast tutorial designed to teach players about the basic systems that exist. Once discovered and properly looted, players can store any items from the safe in their luggage trunk, their primary inventory space. However, similar to inventory in resident Evil and its remakes, items take up a certain amount of space, turning the collection into a kind of puzzle. Players must choose which items from the safes to keep before proceeding to other levels Gloomwood.

A safe in Croup’s fishing level Gloomwood is in the accounting of the factory floor right in the fishery, while the other sits in a cave next to the building. Players have multiple options for reaching the Accounting Office, either by breaking into the boarded-up elevator shaft and climbing to the top, or by smashing through an adjacent window and risking exposure to the infected in the process. Also, an outside guard that players can deal with as they wish, as opposed to dishonored‘s criticized Chaos system includes a key for a door behind Staircase A that leads into the room.

Turning off the light in the accounting office reveals the code for the safe highlighted in green on a wall, which when opened reveals a revolver, revolver ammo, and a valuable widow’s brooch. The second safe is behind some wooden bridges outside of the fishery in a cave system not too far away. The code for this safe cannot be found until the Coast Cliffside level, where a map inside the lighthouse shows the location again and draws the code on a piece of paper lying on a table.

After returning to the cave, the now unlocked safe contains one of the more powerful items Gloomwood‘s survival horror nightmare, the Undertaker Pistol. Armed with a silencer and special ammunition, players no longer need to rely on cunning to rid themselves of the infected menace. Additionally, the pistol can use more than one ammo type, making it a versatile tool that encourages players to go the extra mile to find each safe Gloomwood.
