Expo City Dubai transforms into massive racing track for 22nd Dubai Marathon
Mattar Al Tayer, Vice Chairman of Dubai Sports Council, crowned this year’s winners, with Ethiopian Abdisa Tola winning in his marathon debut in the men’s professional race with a world best time of 2:05:42 while his compatriot Deresa Geleta and second and third became Haymanot Alew Engdayehu.
Meanwhile, Ethiopia’s Dera Dida Yami won the Dubai Marathon’s professional women’s race with a time of 02:21:11. Ruti Aga, who had the fastest personal best in the field, and Siranesh Yirga finished second and third.
“The hosting of the event reflects the city’s growing profile as a leading country on the global sports map and its rise as a major venue for prestigious international sporting events,” said Mattar Al Tayer. He thanked the event’s organizing committee and all government agencies that supported the successful organization of the race for the first time at Expo City Dubai, which has become a major venue for several international sporting events.
Highlighting the great support from Sheikh Mansoor bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Chairman of the Dubai Sports Council, Al Tayer said he was keen to ensure the event was a great success and that participants had an unforgettable experience.
The winners were crowned in the presence of Saeed Hareb, Secretary General of Dubai Sports Council; Naser Aman Al-Rahma, Deputy Secretary General of Dubai Sports Council; Salah Talak, Joint Chief Operating Officer at Dubai Duty Free; Ahmad Al Kamali, General Coordinator of the Dubai Marathon; and Peter Connerton, Manager of the Dubai Marathon. The race was endowed with prize money worth more than 500,000 US dollars.
10 km race
In the men’s 10K race, Noman El-Issawi of Morocco secured first place with a finish time of 29 minutes, followed by Moroccan Anwar El-Ghouz, who finished second with a time of 29:02 minutes. Ethiopia’s Fessa Tadez was third with a time of 29:02 minutes. In the women’s race, Surbi Monga of India took first place after finishing the race in 29:14, followed by Nigeria’s Olofisayo Jabri, who finished second in 29:19. The two Libyan sisters Suhaila and Rula Al-Husseini finished third and fourth with times of 30:30 and 30:36 respectively.
In the People of Determination – Men category, Marcel Haug of Sweden took first place after finishing the race in 01:23:50, followed by Dutchman Getz Plate, who finished second with a time of 01:24 finished: 28. The South African Tian Bosch was third with a time of 01:49:48 hours. In the women’s category of the race, Britain’s Aiden Rainbow Cooper took first place after finishing the race in 01:47:15, followed by Sweden’s Patricia Ekos in 01:56:53. Third place went to Alexandra Hebling from Sweden with a time of 01:57:27.
The Dubai Marathon consisted of three runs: the full 42.195 km marathon; the 10 km road race; and the 4km fun run.
