Pedro Goncalves gave Sporting CP a fighting chance and eventual penalty shoot-out win over Arsenal in the Europa League round of 16 by passing Aaron Ramsdale from the halfway line. Sporting CP and Arsenal drew 2-2 in the first leg of the Europa League round of 16 in Portugal and set up a crucial second leg in the Emirates on Thursday night.

Arsenal midfielder and captain of the evening Granit Xhaka broke out of the stalemate in the first 20 minutes and gave the Gunners control of the last 16 at half-time. Mikel Arteta’s men, on the other hand, were stunned in the second half as Goncalves “channelled his inner David Beckham” with an outrageous shot from near the halfway line.

Arsenal were dispossessed before Goncalves collected the ball, which rushed into the Gunners’ half before lofting a great chip. Ramsdale was caught completely off guard, with the Gunners keeper climbing back to his net to fend off Goncalves.

Sporting CP equalized on the scoreboard and overall after Goncalves’ perfectly placed shot dived over a helpless Ramsdale. Fans on social media immediately compared him to Manchester United legend David Beckham, who scored a famous goal from the halfway line at Wimbledon in 1996.
