FIFA 23: What changes, new features, gameplay, modes will be included?

One of the most exciting factors of a new FIFA version is the changes and upgrades from the previous version.

FIFA 23 is no exception as EA Sports and football governing body FIFA join forces in partnership for the final game ever.

The sports news walks through all the new additions to football’s most famous video game.

What changes and new features are there in FIFA 23?

Ultimate team chemistry

In previous FIFAs, players in Ultimate Team only had chemistry with players if they were positioned close to them on the pitch in the starting XI.

For example, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andy Robertson didn’t contribute to the chemistry of a FUT team because they were positioned at right-back and left-back, respectively.

In FIFA 23, players connect based on the same parameters – club, league and nation – but they gain chemistry no matter where the connected player plays on the pitch.

There will also be no more manual player position changes as individual players will now be listed with up to three positions when playing on them in real games.

women soccer

Most notably, women’s football players and clubs will be available to play in this year’s edition.

Both the French and English women’s leagues feature, promoted by first cover athlete Sam Kerr, who plays for Chelsea FC.

Hypermotion 2

EA Sports also promotes the use of HyperMotion 2 technology, which the video game company says “adds more realism every time you step onto the field” with 6,000 unique animations to recreate realistic player movements during a game.

That tops the 4,000+ new animations introduced with FIFA 22.

WM mode

FIFA 23 will feature a World Cup mode to coincide with the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar taking place in November.

This includes both a men’s and a women’s tournament.

Cross-platform play

Finally, EA Sports developed FIFA 23 to support cross-platform play between consoles.

However, this only applies to same-gen consoles, meaning PlayStation 4 users can only play against those on Xbox One, while those on PlayStation 5 can play against opponents on Xbox Series S/X.

PC gamers will be grouped with the PS5 and Xbox series in the next-gen consoles, while the Nintendo Switch version will not support cross-platform play.

New clubs and leagues

FIFA 23 marks the long-awaited return of Juventus to the game. The Italian giants were previously licensed by Konami and known as Piemonte Calcio in recent FIFA releases.

Women’s football also gets a much bigger presence in FIFA 23, with the addition of clubs from the Women’s Super League and Division 1 Arkema for the first time.

English Fifth Division fans can finally play as these clubs too as the Vanarama National League joins the game.

It’s also likely that every national team that has qualified for the 2022 World Cup will be included in the game, meaning some new international sides will be there.

FIFA 23 Standard Edition vs. Ultimate Edition

As with previous versions, FIFA 23 will feature three different editions that fans can purchase: the Standard Edition, the Ultimate Edition, and the Legacy Edition.

That standard edition will cost $59.99 (£59.99), which is in line with most major video game releases.

That Ultimate edition costs $99.99 (£89.99) but allows the user to access the game three days early on the pre-release date. It also comes with the following:

advantages default Ultimate
Team of the Week 1 Player Item (non-tradable) ✔️ ✔️

That legacy edition costs $39.99 (£34.99) and is a recall of previous versions with updated rosters, but “with no new development or significant improvements,” confirmed EA Sports. This mainly applies to the Nintendo Switch, which is only available in the Legacy Edition. It does not come with the new HyperMotion 2 technological improvements or any of the new game modes. Essentially, this is FIFA 22 with a few minor upgrades.
