Floyd Mayweather’s show fight turned into farce on Sunday night when his opponent John Gotti III sparked a mass brawl by continuing to throw punches after the referee called off the fight.
Mayweather’s professional career ended in 2017 when he ratcheted up his record to 50-0 with a TKO win over Conor McGregor, but the 46-year-old has competed in a string of high-profile exhibition bouts since then.
The last of these took place in Florida on Sunday night, but became more of a WWE Royal Rumble than a boxing match when violent confrontations erupted in the arena midway through the sixth round.
In the early stages of the fight, Mayweather had made easy work of his opponent Gotti III – the grandson of the infamous Gambino crime family mob boss.
He constantly taunted him and dealt him a series of punches, with the 30-year-old getting little retaliation and even being described by one journalist as “helpless”.
Between rounds the referee had spoken to Gotti III’s corner to quell their nonsense talk and finally – midway through the sixth round – the referee called the fight off.
Unfortunately for the man in the middle, this set off a massive ruckus, with Gotti III initially bursting past the referee and continuing to throw punches at Mayweather.
The boxing legend initially blocked and threw a few fists back at his opponent before both teams stepped into the ring and a mass brawl ensued.
Mayweather then sat on the ropes and watched the scene as nearly 50 people jostled and jostled.
