Football news live: Champions League draw, Vieira sacked, Man Utd takeover latest

Carragher chooses the Champions League winner

Jamie Carragher has urged Napoli to win the Champions League after a remarkable quarter-final draw took place on Friday.

Napoli meet Italian rivals AC Milan after finishing in the last eight of the competition for the first time in their history. A win will see Luciano Spalletti’s side, 18 points clear at the top of Serie A, meet Inter Milan and Benfica in the semi-finals.

Given their dominant position in Serie A, Napoli must now be seen as favorites to reach the final from this side of the draw. Carragher believes the underdogs are good enough to go all the way to the flagship event and complete a fairytale story.

Ten Hag sends dressing room message to Man Utd stars

Erik ten Hag urged his Manchester United players to focus on their next game within moments of beating Real Betis in the Europa League.

United avoided a potential banana peel in Spain, winning 1-0 to complete a 5-1 aggregate win over Manuel Pellegrini’s side. They remain among the favorites for Europa League glory, having reached the semi-finals in 2020 and the final in 2021.

However, that is not the only tournament they are aiming for and an FA Cup quarter-final with Fulham awaits them on Sunday. United have already won a domestic cup under Ten Hag this season and goalkeeper David de Gea revealed where the manager’s focus lies.

BREAKING – Europa League draw made

Manchester United play Sevilla in the quarter-finals of the Europa League after the draw charted the path Erik ten Hag’s side must take if they hope to win a second title this season.

United reached the last eight of Europe’s second-tier club competition, edging past Real Betis 5-1 on aggregate after Thursday night’s 1-0 win in Spain. Marcus Rashford scored the only goal of the game to seal progression after a dominant display in the first leg at Old Trafford last week.

Their reward is a third straight KO draw against a Spanish club, followed by a two-legged tie against Sevilla. The game will be played on April 13th and 20th. If they get past that, the winners of Juventus or Sporting Lisbon await in the semi-finals on May 11 and 18.

Dele Alli’s career appears to have taken another blow as the England international is believed to have been dropped from the Besiktas squad.

Alli, 26, joined Besiktas for a season from Everton last August in a bid to revive his stuttering career. But the former Tottenham midfielder has only played 13 league games in Turkey and is said to have been dropped by manager Senol Gunes.

Alli was once considered one of the best youngsters in European football – leaving fans wondering what happened. Former team-mate Kieran Tripper believes Alli’s fall was sparked by Mauricio Pochettino’s departure from Tottenham in November 2019.
