All eyes are on the PLAYERS Championship this week and rightly so, but I have a real soft spot for the Kenya Open and it’s a fun race this year.

In a way I preferred it when they were in Karen because there is a strong aspect to this event through strong riders, but Muthaiga offers similar opportunities in other ways. It’s tight, fiddly, and will frustrate a lot of players.

As I browsed the sub-markets, it struck me that the top Englishman bets include many of these players who might find this course choking them in a way Karen wouldn’t have.

Matthew Jordan, for example, drives longer than you think but can handle it wildly, and last year he was 71st out of 75 players here. The Laurie Canter driver helped him establish himself at this level but he arrives with a poor start to 2023 and an uncertain future.

Garrick Porteous retired last time, Todd Clements relies on his putter, Ashley Chesters has been rather mediocre and poor here on the Challenge Tour in the past, and Andrew Wilson is another driver whose driver is probably his best club, although he putts well.

Among them are many DANIEL BROWN And MATTHEW BALDWINtwo players far better suited to the layout, and if you both back both ways, you get 80% of our total bet back should either player place.

Both should aim higher and Brown in particular looks like an interesting outsider here, having made all six cuts in his rookie season and showing a quality short game like Ashun Wu used to win 12 months ago.

Brown’s ending positions in this market are 9-1-5-8-10-5, which is solid enough as it is. Victory came at Blair Atholl, on high, in Africa, where last year’s Kenya Open runner-up, Thriston Lawrence, won the title.

Whether or not that’s a good guide, now look at Brown’s final rankings among these Englishmen, with the likes of Ross Fisher, Dale Whitnell, Daniel Gavins and many others not in the field this week. Its form is 3-1-2-3-2-1.

Combine that with the fact that Muthaiga could fit more than any course he’s come across to date. I am very hopeful.

Baldwin has been there since and made it down that course by finishing ninth and 28th on the Challenge Tour. He’s about as accurate as can be and that showed last time in India when he finished a shot behind Andrew Wilson and Alex Fitzpatrick.

Among those in that area, only Jordan beat him as Al Hamra, a course where Baldwin’s lack of power is a problem. Still, he was two points ahead of Jordan with two points to play while only Canter and Brown finished ahead of him at Leopard Creek, again on a long course.

Here at Muthaiga he will be in his element and that is simply not the case with many of the 20 players that make up this market. With four places on offer, taking two involves a nice safety net and makes a lot of appeal.

Note that bet365 is offering 14/1 on each of them at the time of writing. However, they must remove Johnston earlier today following his withdrawal and I have therefore consulted with firms whose markets are up to date.
