French Open LIVE: Latest updates after Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz makes winning starts at Roland Garros

Doppelganger Ruud tries to go in one direction at Roland Garros

The French Open continues today in Roland Garros with the second Grand Slam in tennis wide open in both the men’s and women’s tournaments.

Novak Djokovic joins the fray, aiming for a record-breaking 23rd Grand Slam singles title to complement French Open titles he won in 2016 and 2021. With clay court king Rafael Nadal missing this year’s tournament through injury, the 36-year-old Serb seems to have the perfect opportunity to further consolidate his greatness and USA’s Aleksandar Kovacevic is his first opponent this afternoon.

Djokovic’s main contender for the men’s title appears to be young contender Carlos Alcaraz, who has been stirring the tennis world since his emergence. The 20-year-old is already a Grand Slam winner, having won the US Open last year, and could dominate men’s tennis in a post-Djokovic-Nadal-Federer world. The Italian Flavio Cobolli is his first round opponent.

Elsewhere today, Britain’s Cameron Norrie defeated home favorite Benoit Paire dramatically in five sets, while the women’s draw sees the likes of Caroline Garcia, Petra Kvitova and Jelena Ostapenko begin their campaigns.

Stephens says racial slurs are getting “worse” despite the use of AI software

Racist behavior towards athletes is getting worse and even software designed to protect them from it has little effect, said world number 30 Sloane Stephens on Monday.

The American, after her straight-set win over Karolina Pliskova in the first round of the French Open, said she endured it throughout her tennis career.

“Yeah, obviously that’s been a problem throughout my career,” said Stephens, who is black. “It never stopped. If anything, it’s only gotten worse.”

She didn’t go into specific details, but said even software like the one available to French Open players that’s designed to block racist comments can’t prevent it.

Ukraine star says ‘nonsense’ talk isn’t helping war-torn nation

Elina Svitolina defeated Martina Trevisan in the first round of the French Open on Tuesday, before rounding off the “empty words” spoken in the sport about Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Since last year’s attack on the eastern European country, a number of sports stars from Ukraine have tried to further raise awareness and support for their home country, but Svitolina wants to do more than just talk.

“What I found out is a lot, I can’t put it better, but there’s a lot of nonsense going on around the situation where we need to focus on the core of what’s going on,” Svitolina told her 6 afterward: 2 6-2 win.

“Many Ukrainians need help and support and we focus on so many things, like empty words, empty things that don’t help the situation.”

Marta Kostyuk claims it should embarrass the French Open fans who booed her

Marta Kostyuk claimed French Open fans who booed her off the field for refusing to shake hands with Aryna Sabalenka should be ashamed of her reaction.

Of particular interest was the tournament’s opening duel with Philippe Chatrier, as Ukraine’s Kostyuk was the harshest critic both for allowing Russian and Belarusian players to continue competing and for athletes from those two countries not speaking out against their nations .

Sabalenka knew Kostyuk wouldn’t shake her hand at the end of the game and the Belarusian said in her pre-tournament press conference: “If she hates me, okay. I can’t do anything about that.”

The pair stayed wide apart before the fight and didn’t pose together for the usual pre-match picture, and at the end of the 6-3, 6-2 win for the runner-up, Kostyuk shook hands with the referee before heading out your place.

Part of the crowd started booing, startling Sabalenka, who seemed unsure if the gesture was aimed at her, and bowed sarcastically, but fans then cheered her on before taunting Kostyuk as she left.
