Germany vs Morocco prediction, odds, betting tips and best bets for Women’s World Cup group match
Title contenders Germany kick off the 2023 Women’s World Cup in Melbourne on Monday with the opening match of the group stage against African challengers Morocco.
Ranked 72nd in the world, Morocco are the lowest-ranked team in the Women’s World Cup and one of eight teams making their debut in the competition.
At the other end of the spectrum is Germany, which is ranked number two in the world and took part in the finals of the European Championship last summer. A very talented team, Germany have been allocated a relatively easy group but, like everyone else, have yet to secure their place in the knockout rounds.
With Colombia and South Korea raring to go, Morocco have their first attempt at creating an upset in the group stage, but it will take a tremendous effort to pull off the feat.

Germany vs Morocco prediction, odds
- Moneyline Lean: Germany (-2000)
- Handicap lean (spread): Germany -2.5 (-155)
- Outcome Prediction: Germany 3-0 Morocco
Although Germany suffered a friendly loss to Zambia early in the tournament, it’s hard to imagine anything truly bizarre happening here. Still one of the giants in women’s football, the European nation is too talented to see a major misstep here.
Germany have lost only once in their glorious history at the Women’s World Cup in the group stage, winning 19 and drawing four. The chance of a surprise here is very small, the only question is how one-sided the end result will be.

Germany vs Morocco best bet
- Choose: Alexandra Popp scores 2+ goals
- Opportunities: +350 (BetMGM)
While I love playing handicaps in these games with big differences between teams, the handicap (spread) of 2.5 goals seems too accurate to mess with. Annoyingly, the overall goal odds also seem to be spot on – the betting market has a way of getting it right.
So we have to look elsewhere. Germany are capable of increasing their points tally against weaker opponents and with that being a likely scenario here, their top scorer Alexandra Popp will be hungry for a yield. She is in great form, scoring in four of her last six club games of the season, including the Champions League final, and then scoring one against Zambia in the warm-up friendly, ending a five-game win streak.
Popp has played seven multi-goal games for Germany in her career, two of them in her last ten appearances. You can get Popp to score at -145, which is exceptional value in itself, but we’re increasing the number to two goals here for the better return.
Prop bet Germany vs Morocco
- Choose: Morocco over 1.5 yellow cards
- Opportunities: -112 (FanDuel)
Yellow cards are much rarer in women’s football than in men’s. So adjust your orientation slightly as you approach this tournament.
As FIFA’s bottom-ranked team, Morocco have a mountain to climb in this match and the side may need to resort to some physicality to keep Germany at bay.
Zambia received two bookings in their surprise 3-2 win over Germany in pre-tournament friendlies and Morocco received three bookings in their hard-fought Africa Cup of Nations semi-final win over Nigeria last summer, giving multiple yellow card precedents.
Add to that the fact that American official Tori Penso isn’t afraid to pick her pockets in MLS games and I’m tempted to take this a step further. Over 2.5 yellow cards for Morocco is +310 but for that reason we stick to safe play.
