Grimsby wreaked havoc on rock bottom Rochdale with a 1-0 win at Blundell Park which left them five points from safety in the second tier.

Dale had ended a run without a win in nine games last time out, but a fourth loss in six games leaves them with a tough task to avoid relegation to the National League.

The odds were slim during the opening exchanges when Rochdale hit the first target through captain Ethan Ebanks-Landell, who nodded.

Michee Efete went wide at the other end with 25 minutes on the clock, but it was the fighters who were on top at that particular stage.

Grimsby defender Luke Waterfall cleared the line from Devante Rodney after circling the keeper, while Lloyd was on hand to make a similar intervention when Jimmy Keohane was highest from a corner.

Rochdale had turned down appeals to a penalty soon after the restart when Rodney Max forced Crocombe into a low save.

Grimsby survived that spell and summoned a winner when Harry selected Clifton Lloyd with a long pass and the loanee Cheltenham forward made no mistake with his calm touch and finish.
