Gun club hopes to open 370-acre sporting facility in Oldham County | Business
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) – A new rifle club is hoping to open a 850-acre athletic facility and country club in Oldham County.
The owners hope to establish the Heritage Gun Club at 1507 Rebel Ridge Road, which is off 18 Mile Creek Road, in Westport.
Under plans from Oldham County Planning and Zoning, the club hopes to offer a “world-class clay facility for family-friendly entertainment and outdoor enthusiasts in a underused area of Oldham County.” The club would also be home to youth sports teams.
Neighbors bordering the property fear the area will not be quiet for much longer.
“It’s very quiet,” said Hannah Finch, whose garden is not far from Rebel Ridge Road.
Almost every house around the property has signs against the club — signs along a street barely wider than one lane.
“Many of these residents who live down here pull trailers with their horses and won’t be able to get past a number of vehicles in a workday,” Finch said.
Finch created a petition for those who oppose the rifle club. As of Tuesday afternoon, it had over 1,300 signatures. The Heritage Gun Club created a separate petition for supporters of the facility, which had 993 signatures as of Tuesday.
“The shooting range is on a ridge. The shouts and everything reverberates,” she said. You’ll be able to hear gunshots from miles away.”
Finch is also worried about her family, including her husband, a veteran who suffers from PTSD.
The Heritage Gun Club did not respond to multiple requests for comment.
The land is currently designated as agricultural, but developers are hoping to convert the zoning to conditional use – which would allow for the rifle club.
The Oldham County Board of Adjustments will hear the proposal during a public meeting Aug. 18 at 9 a.m
