Haaland, Rashford, Saliba injury news: Latest updates on international squad withdrawals
The final phase of the domestic European season is upon us, but first teams must hope they don’t lose any players to injury this international break.
Manchester United, Barcelona and Bayern Munich are among the teams that have already had players withdrawn from their national team squads due to injuries as a long season that already included a World Cup takes its toll.
Under, the athlete summarizes the most important injuries from around the world during the international period.
England
Nick Pope
Newcastle United goalkeeper Nick Pope has withdrawn from the squad and has been replaced by Tottenham Hotspur’s Fraser Forster. The 30-year-old Pope missed most training sessions at Newcastle last week and played against Nottingham Forest on Friday with a minor injury.
mason mountain
Mason Mount has not played for Chelsea since the 2-0 defeat by Tottenham on February 26. Although he has not featured in Chelsea’s last four games due to a stomach injury, England boss Gareth Southgate called up the 24-year-old, much in defiance of Chelsea manager Graham Potter’s surprise. The Football Association later confirmed Mount’s withdrawal due to the issue.
Marcus Rasford
Manchester United striker Marcus Rashford picked up a minor injury in Sunday’s FA Cup win over Fulham. The 25-year-old required treatment and was substituted 83 minutes into the competition. Southgate opted not to bring in a replacement for either Rashford or Mount.
France
Wesley Fofana
Wesley Fofana played 87 minutes for Chelsea on Saturday before being substituted. Potter confirmed Fofana had hamstring problems after the 2-2 draw with Everton and the centre-back subsequently withdrew from the France squad. It’s a huge blow for Fofana after his first call-up to France’s senior squad.
Wilhelm Saliba
Arsenal defender William Saliba was substituted through injury in the first half of the Europa League second leg against Sporting CP last Thursday and was not included in Sunday’s win against Crystal Palace. Saliba also pulled out of the France squad when Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta said he needed to be evaluated. Monaco’s Axel Disasi and Nice’s Jean-Clair Todibo were nominated for Saliba and Fofana.
Germany
Jamal Musiala
Musiala came on as a half-time substitute in Bayern Munich’s Bundesliga defeat by Bayer Leverkusen on Sunday but was absent from the Germany squad less than 24 hours later. Hansi Flick has not called up a replacement for the attacking midfielder, who has left thigh problems.
Wales
Ben Davis
Ben Davies was substituted after 37 minutes in Tottenham’s 3-3 draw at Southampton on Saturday. The Wales vice-captain was then replaced by Stoke City’s Morgan Fox in Robert Page’s squad.
Spain
Pedri
There was hope that Pedri would return from injury in Sunday’s Clasico against Real Madrid but that proved too early for the Barcelona midfielder. He was withdrawn from the Spain squad on the same day the announcement was made and new coach Luis de la Fuente called up Villarreal’s Yeremy Pino as a replacement on Sunday.

Gerhard Moreno
Villarreal colleague Gerard Moreno was injured and substituted off in the 35th minute of Sunday’s 3-0 win at Osasuna. The 30-year-old was subsequently replaced in the Spain squad by Real Betis’ Borja Iglesias.
Uruguay
Darwin Nunez
Liverpool didn’t have a game this weekend after succumbing to a 1-0 defeat by Real Madrid on Wednesday. Darwin Nunez only played 57 minutes in that game and although manager Jurgen Klopp insisted the striker’s move was not due to injury, he nonetheless withdrew from the Uruguay squad on Friday and was replaced by Johnathan Rodriguez.
Ronald Araujo
Barcelona defender Ronald Araujo looked set to leave Sunday’s Clasico with an injury and the Catalan club subsequently confirmed he had a left adductor problem. Uruguay replaced him with Sebastien Caceres.
Giorgian De Arrascaeta
Giorgian De Arrascaeta played 76 minutes as Flamengo secured their place in Cairoca’s Serie A final on Sunday but withdrew from the Uruguay squad a day later.
Netherlands
Frenkie deJong
Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong is another to pick up an injury in Sunday’s game against Real Madrid. The Dutch FA said De Jong suffered “thigh problems” after El Clasico and he was replaced by Joey Veerman.
Steven Bergwijn
Steven Bergwijn has a knee injury and also withdrew from the Netherlands squad on Monday. Borussia Dortmund’s Donyell Malen replaces the former Spurs winger.
Norway
Erling Haland
Erling Haaland withdrew from the Norway squad on Tuesday. Norway’s team doctor said Haaland had “some pain” in his groin following City’s FA Cup quarter-final win over Burnley on Sunday and would be better served if he received treatment back at City.
Northern Ireland
Johnny Evans
Leicester City defender Jonny Evans has pulled out of the Northern Ireland squad ahead of the games against San Marino and Finland with a hamstring injury. The 35-year-old returned against Chelsea last weekend after spending more than four months on the sidelines with a calf injury.
