Harry Garside denies allegations following arrest on domestic-violence offence

Australian boxer Harry Garside has vowed to defend himself after being accused of domestic violence.

The 25-year-old was arrested at Sydney Airport on Tuesday afternoon, having just returned from South Africa, where he finished second on the reality TV show. I’m a Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here!

He has since been released on bail.

He released a statement on Wednesday pledging to defend his reputation and fight the charges.

“I categorically reject the allegations of violence and deny the police report,” Garside wrote on Instagram.

“I have nothing to hide and will defend myself against this accusation.

“Police have not been provided with all the facts and I am confident my reputation will be upheld by the court proceedings.

“Because the matter is before the court, I will say no more.”

Earlier, police confirmed Garside had been charged with mutual assault (DV) over an alleged incident involving his former partner.

He is scheduled to appear in Downing Center Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday May 24.

“Last month, officers from the Eastern Suburbs Police Area Command launched an investigation into reports of an alleged domestic violence incident at Bellevue Hill on Wednesday 1 March 2023,” NSW Police said in a statement.

“Following an investigation, a 25-year-old man was arrested at around 2.40pm today (Tuesday 2 May 2023) at Sydney International Airport. He was taken to the Mascot Police Station and charged with assault (DV). He has been granted conditional bail to appear in Downing Center Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday May 24, 2023.”

News Corp Police will reportedly claim Garside elbowed and spit at Ashley Ruscoe in an incident following their breakup.

Garside rose to popularity after his bronze medal performance in the lightweight division at the Tokyo Olympics.

Originally from Victoria, the talented southpaw moved to Sydney and turned pro. He won his first three fights, including the national lightweight title in his second.

Garside won fans beyond his sport with his unique approach to life, defying stereotypes about boxers by practicing ballet, painting his nails and being open about his feelings.

Since his time in the jungle, it has been reported that Garside is also facing a possible defamation case from former manager Pete Mitrevski after he made comments during the show’s filming.

Speaking of his career, Garside said, “I hated going pro, just people around me wanting me because I was a potential cash cow.”

Before leaving South Africa, Garside ended an Instagram post suggesting a return to amateur boxing: “Bring on Paris 2024.”
