How Do You Measure Box Dimensions
We want to make sure we're all on the same page, so here are some image references to see which sides we refer to as length, width, and height for your boxes. Measure the length with a tape measure.

The dimensions of a box are based on the opening of an assembled box.
How do you measure box dimensions. Length + 2x width + 2x height. For example, 14 x 11 x 4 means a box that is 14 in length, 11. The shorter side when looking at the top of the box.
Otherwise, if you are shipping a box without a pallet, measure from the bottom of the box to the top. The width side also has a flap, but is always the side shorter than the length. Next, measure the shorter side of the package, or the width.
Standard box dimensions are given in the order length x width x height. To find the right fit, you first need to find out what measurements are best for your desired package. Boxes can be measured two ways:
Select a box that is slightly larger in all 3 dimensions. This will allow for extra padding to protect your product. Having two sets of parallel sides.
Length x width x height (lxwxh) where the height is the vertical dimension of the box when the opening is facing upwards. Continuing the example above, the 3 foot x 4 foot rectangle is the side of a box that has a length of 5 feet, so the dimensions are expressed as 3 ft. When you tell us the dimensions of the box, they need to be in this order, length x width x depth.
Place the box so that the opening or loading side is facing up, as if you are going to fill the box. If you’re measuring for a custom box, you should measure to the closest 1/10th of an inch. The first thing to note:
You need to know how box sizes are measured. Remember the rule of thumb always. Measure the length and width of the pad.
Measure the outside width of the box. When measuring a partition that nests inside a box, first measure the inside dimensions of the box, length and width, then the number of cells, rows and columns, and the desired depth of the partition. Box manufacturers prefer the dimensions of a box to be expressed and measured as inside dimensions.
The dimensions are listed as length x width x depth. Next, measure the side panels, front to back (some may mistake this as the depth), this is the width of the box. The next dimension is width.
The other dimension is the width. How do you measure box dimensions? In the image presented you can easily see what length, width and depth represent.
This will become more clear as you progress further through this blog post! Length x width x height. Finally, turn your tape measure perpendicular to the previous angle and measure the height of the box.
You will need the internal dimensions of the box. Box sizes are measured by their internal dimensions, and are are listed in the order of length, width, and height (l x w x h). Height is the only dimension without a flap.
Have the front of the box facing you. The first step to finding the perfect fit for your product is understanding how the dimensions are laid out on the box. The width is generally a smaller number than the length.
Corrugation runs along the length measurement. Measure the longest side of the package, rounding to the nearest inch. Now, there can be different dimensions of boxes available in the market.
The opening of a box is a rectangle; Multiply this number by 2. How to measure a box standard corrugated boxes are measured as:
If the box is square, then the length and width will be the same number. There are two ways to do this. The first dimension to measure is length.
(for easy reference, you can open this page in another browser window) subscribe to our newsletter! Determining girth (2x width + 2x height) measure the width of the package, rounding to the nearest inch. Alternatively, measure the outside of the box if you want to find out if it can fit into a space.
What do you do now? To measure the length, width, and height of shipping boxes, use a measuring tape or a measuring stick to find the measurement of the longest side of the package. On a square or rectangular planter, measure the distance between each opposite rim for the length and width.
This is done to ensure a snug and protective fit around your product. Draw a line on the score lines where the box folds to create different panels. To get started look at the opening of the box to measure the following dimensions;
Height is how tall your freight is overall. If you are shipping a box on a pallet, start the measurement at the bottom of your pallet end it at the top of your box. When you measure the interior dimensions of a box, position the unglued box in front of you, with the inside of the box facing up.
Dividers can be made from chipboard and corrugated. Accurately measuring the inside of the box is very important to ensure that the proper fit is created. Make sure you measure the internal dimensions rather than the external dimensions!
Measure the outside height of the box. To measure a box, start by measuring the longest inner side of the box to get its length. Next, measure from the bottom of the box to the top of its side to obtain its depth.
Based on the dimensions of the product you sell, you will be able to order a box that will suit your purpose. Mark the two scores that make up the length, width, and depth of the box. Box measurements always correspond to the inner dimensions of the box.
To measure ground packages use the following formula: Now you can move onto the product itself and find each of these dimensions. Make sure to give the dimensions in this order:
Measure the standing side of the box from top to bottom. Measure the outside of the box the same way you did with its interior, but this time with the box flaps closed. All dimensions are also written out as dimension (l) x dimension (w) x dimension (h).
Measure the outside length of the box. Now, measure the distance from one of the inside corners to the top. Then, measure the shorter inner side to check the width.
Measure the height of the package. Simply measure the length, width, and depth (or height) of what you would like to pack and express the measurements in milimetres. The dimensions you see on boxes are always measured from the inside of the box, and they’re consistently formatted by length x width x height.
This will be your length. The side perpendicular to the length and width. If you need to know the depth of the pot, place the tape measure at the side of the pot, and pull the it straight down to the ground.
The longer dimension is the length and comes first in order. The longer side is the length, the short is the width and the perpendicular side is the depth (internationally known as length, breadth and height). The longest side when looking at the top of the box.
Measure the height / depth. Length is always the longest side of the box that has a flap. Make sure you measure to the very tip or edge of each side to get an accurate measurement of its exterior dimensions.
To confirm, stretch a tape measure or ruler from one side of the rim to the other to measure the diameter. Adjust the dimensions you came up with to accommodate the thickness of the wood and the joint type. Measure the inside size of the opening.
