Why isn’t Ja Morant playing?

On Saturday, March 4, the Grizzlies announced that Morant “will be absent from the team for at least two games.”

The team statement came after Morant was seen pointing a gun on his Instagram Live at a nightclub in the early morning of Saturday March 4th. NBA spokesman Mike Bass then said the league was investigating the situation.

Morant made a statement in which he took responsibility for his actions and apologized to the franchise, his family, and the city of Memphis, among others.

Morant’s absence is not technically a suspension and will last for at least two games, according to the team.

In Morant’s statement, he shared that he will “take some time to get help and work on better ways to manage stress and my overall well-being.”

Based on language in statements from the Grizzlies and Morant, his absence could be tied to days rather than games.

As the season winds down, Memphis’ hold on the West’s No. 2 wanes. The Grizzlies face a tough game against teams also competing for Western Conference berth.
