How many NHL goalies have scored a goal? Bruins’ Linus Ullmark joins exclusive list with tally vs. Canucks

Linus Ullmark has been one of the best in the NHL at preventing goals this season. He showed on Saturday that he can meet them too.

Late in a one-goal game against the Canucks in Vancouver, a misplaced pass from Conor Garland to Brock Boeser found its way across the ice to Ullmark. Realizing he had time, the Bruins goalie leaned over to the Canucks’ empty net and threw it high across the ice to the far end.

Indeed, the shot landed in the Canucks’ zone and slid untouched into the empty net to end the game for the Bruins in their 3-1 win.

Ullmark is having a stellar season in his second season at the net for the Bruins. He leads the league with a 1.86 clean sheet average, a .938 save percentage and a 30-4-1 record. According to BetMGM, he is the absolute favorite for the Vezina Trophy at -200.

Ullmark came into exclusive company as a goaltender who scored a goal in an NHL game. Here’s a look at the others who have done it.

NHL goalie with a goal

Some goaltenders have been credited with a goal for being the last player on their team to touch the puck before it went into the net. In these cases, an opponent accidentally scored a goal for their own team. Then there are the goaltenders who put the puck in the net.

In NHL history, 13 goalies have scored a total of 16 goals. Ullmark became only the eighth goaltender to put the puck straight into the net. The full list of these goalkeepers:

Hextall, the 1986-87 Vezina champion, was the first to flick the puck across the ice and score. He helped seal a 5-2 Flyers win over the Bruins after Boston drew Rejean Lemelin. He is the only goalkeeper who has managed the feat twice. His second goal was the first scored by a goalie in the playoffs, and he also became the first goalie to score while his team was outnumbered.

While Brodeur only flicked the puck across the ice for a goal once, he was credited with two more goals. On February 15, 2000, he was credited with a game-winning goal when the Flyers’ Daymond Langkow found his own net with 9:43 left to give New Jersey a 3-1 lead. The Devils won the game 4-2. Brodeur also received credit for a goal against the Hurricanes on March 21, 2013, when Jordan Staal missed a pass that went to an empty Carolina net after Dan Ellis left his crease on a delayed penalty. With Ellis still on the ice and heading for the bench, Brodeur was credited with scoring a goal against Ellis.

The first time an NHL goaltender was credited with a goal occurred on November 28, 1979. The Islanders’ Billy Smith was the last to touch the puck before the Rockies’ Rob Ramage missed on a late pass into the empty goal for a penalty. The Rockies won the game 7-4, and to this day Smith remains the only goalie to score in a loss.

Four other goaltenders are credited for goals: Damian Rhodes of the Senators was counted against the Devils on January 2, 1999 when Lyle Odelein scored an own goal; The Sabers’ Mika Noronen scored on 14 February 2004 after a misguided pass by the Maple Leafs’ Robert Reichel went into the open net; The Predators’ Chris Mason scored on April 15, 2006 when the Coyotes’ Geoff Sanders put the puck into his own net from a late penalty; and Cam Ward of the Hurricanes was credited with a goal on December 26, 2011 when a pass from the Devils’ Ilya Kovalchuk found an empty goal.

No goalie has ever scored a goal and then won the Vezina Trophy in the same season. Ullmark is in a strong position to be the first to accomplish this feat.
