How many people watched Super Bowl 57? Chiefs vs. Eagles draws third-highest viewership ever for a TV event

Super Bowl 57 lived up to expectations as the NFL’s top two teams competed before the Chiefs eventually won their second championship in four years.

While the ending wasn’t the most satisfying for any fan hoping for an ending as thrilling as the rest of the game, the Super Bowl delivered again.

From a great performance of the national anthem to Rihanna’s halftime show to the game itself, there was a reason Super Bowl 57 is expected to be the most-watched television show in America this year. And as it turns out, it’s the 3rd most-watched TV event of all time!

Below is a full breakdown of viewership and ratings for Super Bowl 57.

How Many People Watched Super Bowl 57?

The Chiefs vs. Eagles Super Bowl ended in a tie 113 million viewers on Sunday.

Yahoo Sports columnist Dan Wetzel originally stated it was the most-watched TV event, but later corrected himself to say it was the third-highest. Below is also the list of top 10 TV markets.

It’s the most watched Super Bowl since 2017.

Additionally, Sportico’s Anthony Crupi followed with more numbers showing that nearly 9 out of 10 households in the Kansas City area were tuned in for the Chiefs-Eagles game.

The halftime show attracted 118 million viewers, to Crupi.

The Super Bowl has typically hovered around 100 million television viewers for the past six years. Super Bowl 55 averaged 98.2 million viewers, the game’s lowest mark in 13 years, but viewership recovered slightly, with 101.1 million viewers for Super Bowl 56 between the Bengals and Rams last year.

Of course, it’s impossible to get a complete measure of total viewership, given that many people watch the game in a group setting and streaming services affect the numbers. NBC estimated that Super Bowl 56 had an average viewership of 112.3 million, including those who watched Peacock. That was a significant increase from Super Bowl 55, which aired on CBS.

Tight games tend to keep viewers interested. Super Bowl 56, which featured two new quarterbacks on the NFL’s biggest stage, fared better from the viewers’ perspective than last year’s blockbuster matchup between Patrick Mahomes and Tom Brady. The difference may have been that Super Bowl 56 was played to the last minute, while Super Bowl 55 was a blowout for much of the second half.

Super Bowl 57 was one of the most competitive in recent memory, with a characteristic Chiefs comeback and a tie in the final five minutes.

Super Bowl Ratings 2023

According to a Fox press release, Super Bowl 57 ran away in primetime viewership across all networks with a household rating/share of 40.0/77.

Ratings are a slightly different unit than average viewership. For example, while viewership at Super Bowl 56 soared, ratings were at a 53-year low.

Super Bowl 56 scored a 36.9 rating, but household ratings are becoming increasingly difficult to measure the exact number. According to Sports Media Watch, household ratings don’t count “out-of-home viewing and streaming,” so the 112.3 million number gives a better picture of what viewership was like for NBC and its streaming platforms.
