How to Add Captions to Your Video in Google Drive

If you want to share a video in Google Drive but need subtitles, there is a handy way to add them. Here’s how.

Google Drive is a great platform for sharing documents, videos, and more. But have you ever wondered if you could make sharing more enjoyable for you and your recipients?

You may be sharing a video that requires subtitles for translation, or some of your viewers may have hearing problems. In such cases, captions and subtitles can help your audience understand your message.

Luckily, Google Drive has a handy feature that lets you add subtitles to your videos. Here we show you how to do it.

How to create a subtitle file in Google Docs

If you want to share Google Drive files and add subtitles to your video, you need to create a subtitle file first. A subtitle file allows you to add text and accurately time the subtitles in your video. Chrome’s live subtitles feature may be disabled, so adding native subtitles is a more reliable solution.

Google Drive only supports SubRip (*.SRT) and SubViewer (*.SUB) files. Luckily, you can create a subtitle file using Google Docs. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Open Google Docs and open Google Drive in another tab or window.
  2. Specify the timestamp of the text you want to add captions to. You can achieve this by hovering over the red line of the Google Drive video.
  3. Add the exact narration time from the video on a Google Docs page. For example, if the first caption’s timestamp is between three and nine seconds, your first line should look like this: 0:00:03.0:00:09
  4. On a new line, add the text that falls under this timeframe.
  5. To add a second caption line, add a space to separate your following caption and do the same steps for the following timestamp and text.
  6. When you’re done adding your captions and timestamps, click file in the upper left corner.
  7. Go to Download. Then click plain textand save your file.

How to upload your subtitle file to Google Drive

Uploading your subtitle file is a simple process and doesn’t take as much time as creating your subtitle file. To add subtitles to your video, you need to do the following:

  1. Launch Google Drive and go to your video.
  2. Click on the three vertical dots in the upper right corner.
  3. Choose Manage subtitle tracks.
  4. Go to Add new subtitle tracks.
  5. Click on uploadand add the subtitle file.
  6. Enter an optional track title and select upload.

Make your Google Drive videos more accessible

Adding subtitles to your videos is a great way to reach a larger audience as it accommodates everyone and ensures your message gets across.

The instructions provided above will help you add captions and subtitles to your videos. That way no one is left out and you can enjoy an enhanced Google Drive experience.
