How to block an email address

Electronic messaging is a fantastic and instant way to interact with others and deliver virtually any message. You can share files, pictures, messages and anything else you want. However, some people use it for more obscure reasons, and it’s best to block them before they get to you. Gmail makes it easy, from the best Android phones or from a desktop, and prevents spammers and other unwanted senders from contacting you via your email address.

If you block an email address, future messages sent to you will automatically be marked as spam so they won’t appear in your inbox. However, they are still available in your spam folder or your trash, depending on which method you choose. Read on to learn how to do this.


Block someone from an email message

The easiest way to block someone in Gmail is to do it through an email you’ve received, whether you’re accessing Gmail from a computer or the mobile app. Once you block someone, their messages are automatically sent to your spam folder and invisible in your inbox. You can still access it if you need it, but only for a short time since Gmail deletes spam messages after 30 days.

use a computer

  1. Open Gmail with your regular web browser.
  2. Navigate to the email from the sender you want to block.
  3. Click on the three dots (⋮) menu on the right side of the screen.
  4. click block Sender.
  5. Confirm that you want to block the sender by clicking block Button.
  6. You are ready! Future emails from this address will be automatically sent to your spam folder.

With the mobile app

  1. open that gmail app on your phone.
  2. Find and open the email from the sender you want to block.
  3. Tap the three dots (⋮) menu. to the right of the sender’s name.
  4. Beat block user.

  5. A gray section will appear under the subject line confirming that you have blocked the user. Future emails will be automatically moved to the spam folder.

Block someone manually

Although the methods above are the simplest, there may be situations where you need to proactively block a sender. You can do this in a few steps. You can also use this method if you’d rather emails go straight to the trash instead of going to your spam folder.

  1. Navigate to Gmail using a desktop web browser.
  2. Tap the filter icon in the search bar at the top of the screen.
  3. Define the filters you want to use. If so, enter an email address in the field Out of set up.
  4. click create filters keep going.
  5. Check the box next to delete it and click create filters.
  6. All new emails matching your criteria will be deleted immediately and will not appear in your inbox or spam folder.
  7. You can access these deleted emails whenever you need as they are in your Trash folder. However, you have to be quick because messages are automatically deleted after 30 days, just like the spam folder.

Unblock someone

If you feel regret after blocking someone, or have restored a healthy relationship with a blocked contact, you can easily unblock them. There are several possibilities for this.

From an email

If you have blocked someone using the first method above, one click is all it takes to unblock a sender. The steps are the same whether you’re using a desktop web browser or your phone.

  1. Open an email from the person you want to unblock. If the person has continued to write to you despite being blocked, you will most likely find one of their emails in your spam folder. Otherwise, look for an old email from that person. If you can’t find an email, you can use the method below to unblock it.
  2. Because you’ve blocked this sender, you’ll see a gray card before the message that says “You’ve blocked [sender]. New messages from this sender will be sent to spam.”

  3. Tap or click Unblock Sender and confirm the operation.
  4. New emails from this sender will now appear in your inbox as usual. Check your spam folder for older messages from this sender if you wish to retrieve them.

Using Settings

The following steps will work for all of the above methods as it allows you to unblock people and remove filters using Gmail settings. However, they require a computer as the settings are a bit more complex.

  1. Navigate to Gmail using a desktop web browser.
  2. Click on that wheel icon in the upper right corner.
  3. click Show all settings.
  4. Go to Filters and blocked addresses Section.
  5. On this screen you will see all your filters and blocked contacts.
  6. To remove a filter, click Extinguish Besides. You can also bulk delete them by checking the boxes next to their names and clicking Extinguish button at the bottom of the section.
  7. To unblock a contact, click unlock next to their name or email address. You can also bulk unblock people by checking the boxes next to their names and clicking Unblock selected addresses button at the bottom of the screen.
