How to Clean Gym Clothes the Right Way Without Losing Elasticity or Wicking

At the end of a long week laundry is the last thing I want to deal with. I especially don’t want to split my clothes into multiple loads to prolong the process. While I definitely won’t judge you for tossing your delicates with jeans and lights, I highly recommend pulling out your gym clothes to wash them separately.

Because of the materials used, athletic apparel can be difficult to clean without losing elasticity or moisture wicking and preventing pilling. Most athletic wear is made of polyester, nylon, and other materials that can wear out quickly if not washed properly. And not to mention how easily these clothes collect sweat, lint and dirt.

You probably spent a pretty penny on yours spats, sports bras, gym shorts and yoga pants, so be sure to wash them properly to prolong the life of each item. Here’s how. What you need to get started

To clean your sportswear, you only need a few items that you probably have lying around at home.

  • laundry detergent
  • Woolite or another detergent for delicate fabrics
  • vinegar (optional)

The best way to clean sportswear

Most of your sportswear can be machine washed Washing machine on a gentle cycle with cold water. As with all other washes, separate the darkness from the lights and turn all garments inside out before putting them in the washing machine.

Leggings, shorts, yoga and sweatpants

Most machine-safe items are easy to wash. After separating the laundry into piles and turning the clothes inside out, add detergent and start the cold cycle. The water temperature is critical. Hot water can damage the fibers of fabrics, and most detergents are designed to work more efficiently in cold water anyway.

Cotton workout clothes, like many t-shirts, can be washed on a normal cycle but will still cling to cold water.

Pro Tip: If your clothes still smell after machine washing, soak the item in water with a cup of white vinegar for about 30 minutes, then machine wash again.

I recommend hand washing your sports bras to prevent the padding from curling or wrinkling. Just fill your sink with cold water and add about half a cup of Woolite or other mild detergent. Let it soak for 30 minutes to an hour before rinsing with clean water.

How to dry sportswear

I know it’s tempting to throw your clothes in the dryer for a faster process, but it’s best to skip the dryer when it comes to gym wear. The heat can ruin the fibers and make your workout clothes less stretchy, tighter and pillier. It is best to lay the sportswear flat and let it air dry to help the clothing hold its shape.
