A dynasty can potentially consist of multiple houses, with the most powerful acting as the head of the dynasty. However, players do not have to be the Dynasty Head to start a cadet branch. The process is relatively easy as long as players meet all the requirements.

How to form a cadet branch

Players wishing to create a cadet branch from an existing dynasty must first meet a few requirements. Depending on a player’s chosen character at the start of a game, this can sometimes be instantaneous. In other cases, players will have to wait a bit before creating a cadet branch.

The regulations on who qualifies to form a cadet branch are as follows, courtesy of the CK3 wiki:

  • Not the current house manager
  • Must be an adult
  • Must have feudal or clan government
  • Not third or nearer in succession to any of the current Head of House titles
  • The current house has no living ancestors
  • No bastard
  • Men must be married if they belong to a female-dominated faith
  • Women must be married in a male-dominated belief
  • Married characters must be in a patrilineal (for males) or matrilineal (for females) marriage

It is also worth noting that a cadet branch is created when a member of the house refuses a religious conversion request. When a character meets all of these requirements, a new cadet branch is created. All children of the above character will belong to the new house. Players can form a cadet branch by opening the decisions Tab where they should see if they meet all the requirements.

The advantages of a cadet branch

Being the head of your own cadet branch is better than being just another face in the dynasty’s lineage. A head of house naturally has more influence and wields a greater degree of power over the other family members of his newly formed cadet branch.

There are several perks of being a house head. First, the house managers legitimize bastard childrenallowing players to increase their pool of viable heirs in the event their rightborn children died or were never conceived at all.
