How to Defeat The Sound of the Abyss
thymesia hosts a variety of difficult enemies and bosses, with some of the side bosses being the most interesting and monumental fights in the game. These bosses offer the player various loot including new power-ups, memory shards, and potion upgrade materials. Alongside this, these bosses allow players to unlock different endings by combining their cores with each other. The sound of the abyss is a gigantic worm at the heart of the secret laboratory in the Royal Gardens zone. It can only be fought after the player has defeated The Hanged Queen and completed the required sub-quest to finally meet the beast.
The Sound of the Abyss fights the player in a large arena where the fleshy crystal worm occasionally strikes, allowing the player to hit it. Overall, this fight is one of the easier ones thymesiabut The Sound of the Abyss deals incredible damage and can easily wipe out a player if they don’t read their tells carefully.
The Sound of the Abyss Moveset Stage 1
Like the game’s first boss, Odur, The Sound of the Abyss has two phases. Each of these phases has its own moveset.
Crystal Eruption Rain
- Attack: The worm will shake the cave violently, causing crystals to fall from the sky. These crystals are indicated by a red circle on the ground. As the crystals fall, a larger red circle will appear where the worm will leap out of the ground, damaging everything in the area.
- Counter: This train is telegraphed and fairly easy to dodge. Players should avoid the red circles while luring the worm to strike. To do this, stand in an area where no crystal will land until the circle for the worm appears, then quickly dodge out of the way.
diving thrust
- Attack: The worm slowly backs away for a moment, then dives towards the player. This attack deals heavy damage.
- Counter: This attack can only be deflected by quick dodges. If the player can dodge, they take no damage. However, if the player is hit, they should heal themselves via a potion.
Slam and slide
- Attack: This is Sound of the Abyss’ most devastating attack. The worm leans to one side of the arena, strikes, and makes a sweeping movement to the other side of the arena. This attack deals massive damage and can definitely be the finishing blow to a run.
- Counter: This attack is actually quite easy to dodge if players can read it early. There are small alcoves near the entrance to the arena that players can hide in to avoid this attack, making it rather negligible. Players should be careful that the move is quite quick and can catch players off guard if they are not in a good spot when the worm sweeps the arena.
It is important to note that in Phase 1 of The Sound of the Abyss battle Damage can only be dealt to the worm by hitting its side weak spots. These are only accessible once the worm has struck, so players should be patient and wait for them to deal damage. Once the player has depleted the first health bar of The Sound of the Abyss, they will enter Phase 2.
The Sound of the Abyss Stage 2
The second phase of The Sound of the Abyss fight is pretty gimmicky and doesn’t really demand much from the player. In this phase, players will mainly do the same things: now dodge the falling crystals and occasionally larger boulders. Once players have survived long enough, the Sound of the Abyss will strike again, revealing its core. This allows the player Run the worm and end the fight.

Talent Recommendations
- Edged Weapons: This talent is generally useful in most cases thymesia. Increased damage on Saber attacks allows players to get through a health bar quicker and thus get through a fight quicker.
- Long Claw: Unlike Short Claw, investing in Long Claw allows players to deal higher burst damage, which is important in a fight like this since the worm only stays vulnerable for a certain amount of time.
- Blessing: This talent allows players to randomly take less damage. This is a useful talent here, as it’s possible to mitigate some incoming damage from the boss or crystals. At level 3, Boon also allows a potion to be used automatically when the player falls below 1 health, saving them from being hit.
Beginners should note that talents can be swapped out at any time, meaning players are free to customize their talents according to what they feel is appropriate for the battle.
plague weapon
Any plague weapon will work in this fight as players will not directly hit the boss for most of the fight. However, a plague weapon capable of dishing out enough burst is useful for dealing high damage to the boss while he is vulnerable.
potions
That Long lasting potion is useful in this fight due to the non-aggressive nature of the boss. Players have plenty of time to heal between his attacks as the boss is quite slow. Another aspect of Long Lasting Potion is the sheer value it offers players in terms of its health benefits.
Gameplay Tips
burst damage
Since the boss is only vulnerable for a short time, players should pay attention deal as much burst damage to the boss as possible. This means they use burning plague weapons or other high damage abilities they have when they can.
confirm damage
Acknowledging the player’s wound damage is just as important as distributing the wounds in the first place. Players should take extra care when greedy as they could potentially damage The Sound of the Abyss’ entire health bar just to heal it back up.
