How to empty and clean a Roomba vacuum

Smart vacuum cleaners ensure a clean floor and save time and effort. However, they do require some manual tasks, including being able to clean the furniture and emptying and cleaning it after a vacuuming cycle. Some models make this task easier thanks to a docking station that collects dust, like the self-draining Roborock Q5.

Regardless of this function, however, a robot vacuum cleaner requires some maintenance, especially when it comes to removing dirt from its extractors, as well as removing hair and dust from the wheels. It’s best to complete these tasks every month or more frequently. If you have a pet that sheds a lot, you should do it at least every two weeks for a reliable cleaning effect.

Empty and clean the trash can

If your smart vacuum doesn’t have a self-draining dustbin, you’ll need to empty it after each use. It’s okay if you forget it every once in a while as the bin is big enough for a second run. However, doing it daily will ensure it doesn’t fill up in the middle of a job.

1. Press the publication button on the trash can to pull it out.

2. Open the trash can door and empty the contents by pouring them into the trash.
3. Remove the filter and gently tap it against the waste bin a few times to remove excess dust and debris.
4. Periodically wipe the inside of the bin with a damp cloth to remove dust and dirt. You can also wash it under lukewarm water to remove dust. Never put it in the dishwasher. Let it dry completely before putting it back into Roomba.

5. When you’re done, put the filter and dust bin back in place by sliding them into your Roomba.

Replace the filter every two months for the best cleaning results. Do not wash it as it is not designed to come into contact with water. Instead, buy a new one and discard the old one.

Clean the brushes and dirt extractors

Many people forget to remove dirt from their brushes, resulting in poor cleaning results. This is especially important if you have a pet or loose hair in your home, as these tend to get caught in the robot’s wheels and brushes, preventing it from moving properly. Removing hair and dust from the brushes is easy.

1. Carefully turn your Roomba over and place it on a flat surface.
2. Press the small tabs on the cleaning head module door to open it.

3. Gently pull on the brushes to dislodge them and brush away any dust or dirt you see.
4. Pull on the side of the bearings to separate them from the brush. If you have trouble removing it, use a small screwdriver to gently pry it up and separate it from the rest of the brush.

5. Remove any hair stuck to the brushes and bearings.
6. Put the bearings back on the brushes.
7. Before replacing the brushes, remove the dust cup and check that the suction path is clear and that there is no dirt or dust blocking the path.
8. Reinstall the brushes by matching their shapes to the pins on Roomba.
9. Close the door and make sure it is latched before putting your Roomba back on the floor.
10. Put the trash can back in place.

Your Roomba also has an edge sweeping brush that will need to be replaced from time to time. Even if it looks fine, use a screwdriver to remove it and remove hair and dust before reinstalling as these can prevent it from rotating normally.

Clean the wheels

Roombas use wheels to get around, and while the two large side wheels aren’t easily removable, the front caster wheel can be quickly cleaned and replaced.

1. Pull the wheel firmly to remove it.
2. Remove dirt from the wheel housing and the wheel.

3. Put the wheel and the plastic housing back together on the Roomba.
4. Gently wipe the side wheels with a damp cloth to remove excess dust and dirt.

Clean the sensors

Roombas are packed with sensors to help them find their way and recognize when it’s time to empty the bin. These need to be free of dirt and dust, otherwise they will send false notifications to you and affect your robot’s performance. They are easy to clean.

1. Take a clean cloth and dampen it with a few drops of rubbing alcohol.
2. Gently wipe the sensors underneath Roomba and the charging pins.
3. Wipe them off immediately with another dry cloth.
4. Remove the trash can, open it and gently wipe the sensors with the damp cloth and then the dry one.

Keep your Roomba clean, it does the same with your floors

Keeping your Roomba clean is a small price to pay to keep your floors clean and extend the life of the vacuum. Removing dirt and dust and replacing its components when necessary will maximize its effectiveness and longevity.
