By default, your iPhone keyboard emits a clicking sound when you tap a key on the keyboard so you can hear a key press. But maybe you want more sensory feedback that shows you’ve pressed a button. With iOS 16, you can enable a haptic keyboard that vibrates slightly when you tap a key.

You can use the haptic keyboard with or without the clicking sound that you hear when you tap a key. Also, the haptic keyboard works even when your phone is in silent mode. Here’s how to enable it and how it works.

First, make sure you have updated your phone to iOS 16 or later. Go to Settings, select General and then tap on the Software update option. You will be informed that iOS is up to date or prompted to download and install the latest update.

You can also set up your iPhone to use the haptic keyboard in ringer mode instead of silent mode. To do this, go to Settings and select Sounds & Haptics. Tap the Keyboard feedback setting. Turn on the switch for haptics. Go back to the Sounds & Haptics screen and make sure the toggles for “Play Haptics in Ringer Mode” and “Play Haptics in Silent Mode” are turned on (Figure C).

Apple warns that turning on keyboard haptics can drain your iPhone’s battery life. Without more details, it’s difficult to know if this is a big problem. However, you may want to turn the haptics off for a typical day and then leave them on for another typical day to gauge the potential impact on your phone’s battery life.
