How to enjoy your first weekend back on campus

Welcome back to campus, Huskers! As you fill up the dormitories, canteens, academic buildings, and unions, you’ll likely bump into old friends and plan to meet up with new ones.

The first weekend on campus usually involves meeting new people, attending Big Red Welcome events, and lots of new experiences. Remember, making a good choice will help you stay safe.

If you decide to drink, read these safety tips:

  • meal – If you drink alcohol, eat a high-protein meal before heading out for the night. If possible, try to eat during your evening as well.
  • hydrate – Drink plenty of water before drinking alcohol. If you’re at a party or at the bar, alternate between alcoholic beverages and water.
  • stay tuned – Know roughly how many servings of alcohol are in the drinks you consume and keep an eye on it in your head or on your phone.
  • make a plan – Make a plan with your friends before you go out at night. Decide how to get to the bar or party, how long you want to stay, and how to get home.
  • glue together – don’t let anyone go home alone.
  • Know how to get home – If you are new to Lincoln and want to go out, make sure you know how to get home afterwards. Make sure your phone has enough battery life in case you need to map the area. and consider sharing your location with a friend or roommate.

No matter what your weekend holds, Remember that 35% of UNL students have not drunk in the past year – if you choose not to drink, you are not alone.

While university feels big and unfamiliar, you will soon form a circle of friends. You can find people who are like-minded and want the same things from college as you do.

Looking for a first-weekend alcohol-free activity? Plan to attend events that are part of Big Red Welcome.
