NBA Opening Night 2023: Both NBA Finals teams on display as Celtics host 76ers, Warriors host Lakers

The start of the 2022-23 NBA season is getting closer.

It was reported Monday that Opening Night 2023 will feature both teams from last year’s NBA Finals when the Celtics host the 76ers and the Warriors host the Lakers.

There will be no shortage of star power in the opening night spotlight as Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown square off with Joel Embiid and James Harden to open the season. The rivalry between the Celtics and the 76ers rarely disappoints as no love is lost between these two franchises to this day.

Speaking of rivalries, we’ll see Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson and Draymond Green take on a familiar opponent in LeBron James as the Warriors trio speak for the first time since winning their fourth NBA championship ring. Golden State will get their first crack at the new-look Lakers, while Anthony Davis will look to start the new season with a bang after an injury-plagued 2021-22 season.

The reigning Eastern Conference champions will take on a hungry 76ers team that far underperformed last season. As Tatum and Brown try to get Boston back on the NBA Finals stage after two wins before their first championship, they need to go through Embiid and Harden to get the season started. Embiid has caused problems for the Celtics in the past so this will be an early test for the likes of Robert Williams III and Al Horford. But do the 76ers have enough firepower to keep up with Boston’s revamped roster after adding Malcolm Brogdon and Danilo Gallinari in the offseason?

In the second game of the opening night doubleheader, the reigning NBA champion meets a Lakers team that completely missed the playoffs last season. Injuries and poor roster construction meant James missed the playoffs for the third time of his career, but he, Davis and Russell Westbrook go into the new season with something to prove. Los Angeles is immediately put to the test as the Warriors look just as loaded as they did last year. With James Wiseman returning from injury and other youngsters like Jonathan Kuminga and Moses Moody likely to step up, Golden State will be in contention for their seventh finals appearance in the last nine seasons.
