How to find out what song is playing near you on the Google Pixel

We’re sure you’ve come across a track at a pub, restaurant, or even at a friend’s house and wondered, “What’s that song?” While Shazam is a popular music recognition app, it works on best on iPhones since Apple owns them. However, if you have a recent Google Pixel phone like the Pixel 7, you don’t need a separate app to detect music playing around you. Pixel phones are packed with lots of AI smarts, and one of those features allows them to identify songs you’re listening to around you.

The Pixel-exclusive option, called “Now Playing,” recognizes music using a database of songs stored on your phone. The automated process never sends audio or background conversations to Google. However, if you add a search for songs button on your lock screen, each time you tap it, Google will get a brief digital audio fingerprint to identify the song.

Without further ado, here’s how to use your Google Pixel to find out what song is playing near you.

If you want your Google Pixel phone to automatically detect songs that are playing around you, you can simply change the settings on your phone to enable automatic song detection. Follow the instructions below to start the process.

• Open your Pixel settings apartment
• Beat Sound & Vibration and then Running now.
• turn on Identify songs playing nearby.

For the feature to work, make sure your phone is charged and connected to WiFi. You have to wait a few minutes while your phone downloads the song database. Once the download is complete, songs playing around you will be automatically identified and displayed on your lock screen.

Sometimes you will come across music that your Google Pixel’s automatic song recognition feature doesn’t recognize. That’s because the downloaded library of songs your device uses to match the music it’s listening to is limited and doesn’t contain all the songs available. For this reason, you can also manually search Google for songs that you hear in your area.

As a Google Pixel user, you have the option of adding a song search button to your lock screen. As we’ve said before, this sends an audio snippet to Google for a broader search than the auto-identification process.

To add a search button to your lock screen, go to Settings > Sounds & Vibration > Now Playing and turn on the switch for those Show search button on lock screen.

You can easily view a history of the songs your phone has identified and listened to. Follow the steps below to view song information history on your Google Pixel.

• Open your phone settings apartment
• Beat Sound & Vibration and then Running now. Make sure that “Show songs on lock screen” is on.
• Beat Now gameplay.

If you have listened to any songs, you will get a list of songs that have been playing around you. You can tap the song to share it or listen to it in a music app on your phone. On Pixel 3 and later, you can also select multiple songs to listen to, share, or delete from your queue on a music service.

It’s very easy to manage and interact with notifications you receive when your Pixel detects a song. To learn more about a song, you can tap the song name when it appears on your lock screen. Keep in mind that this only happens if you have notifications enabled for the feature.

To ensure you receive detected music notifications, go to Settings > Sounds & Vibration > Now Playing. Under the “Notifications” section there should be a heading of “On”. If you find that the notifications are disabled, just tap on the option and toggle on the switch next to it Detected music notifications.

If you’re using your phone and a song is identified near you, expand the notifications at the top, then tap the song notification.

If you don’t want to receive song notifications at the top of your screen, you can turn them off by following the same steps above. Don’t worry. Track information will still appear on your lock screen.
