How to find the doi of an article. If you have a citation for a book or article in hand and would like to know if a doi has been associated with it, you can use the metadata search at the crossref.org site. They may be called detailed record, abstract, abstract/details, or you may need to click on the article title to see more information about the article. Crossref.org provides a doi lookup service that will search for a doi based on citation information (author's last name, journal name, article title, etc.).

A doi is a unique alphanumeric string that identifies content and provides a persistent link to its location on the internet. If the database has a “cite this article” button, this should also produce a citation with the doi included. If the url changes, the publisher will update the metadata in crossref with the new url, so that the doi will always take you to the correct location of the work.

Many articles in library databases will not have a doi. Simply type in as much of the citation as you know. Look up a doi number to complete a reference citation.

Find your article in the results list. To find the journal homepage, search the web for the journal title. You will then do a web search for the homepage of the journal.

Put the title inside quotation marks, so that you are searching that. Press search to find matching articles and get their doi numbers. Find a doi for specific steps and examples.
