01 STEP ONE

Start with an empty table, whether it’s your entryway console, coffee table, or sideboard. Next, introduce a hanging artwork in the background that will center the entire display once complete. It’s best to keep this piece more muted with a repeating pattern versus a landscape or something more detailed. Add lighting and a crooked artwork that’s a clear opposite of the hanging art, like a gold frame against a black one.

02 STEP TWO

Again, use a contrasting piece of art, leaning a smaller piece against the first, then add some vessels, a basket or some sort of structural element that will later be filled with textiles to add some warmth to the holiday look. And a stack of books is always a good idea.

03 STEP THREE

Placing a small curiosity at the top of your stack of books will break up the hard edges and add visual interest. Start layering smaller items after you have the larger pieces in place, like ornaments in a bowl or a small wreath attached to one of the crooked frames. This step is about merging form with function. Dried flowers are a great way to add a sense of coziness while also offering some longevity. It’s always a shame to see your favorite seasonal flowers wither. Adding a candle is twofold, providing a delightfully cozy atmosphere and adding fragrance to your design scheme.

04 STEP FOUR

Soft textiles are so seasonal, a nod to the colder months when warmth and coziness are key. When draped outside of a woven basket, it creates an inhabited feeling, as if nothing is too precious or not meant to be touched. And finally, it’s a holiday, bring in the wreath and tree. One wrapped in burlap or sitting in a textured pot lends that worn-in character we love. Objects that feel like they tell a story are some of our favorites around the holiday season.
