How to Make a Water Elevator in Minecraft

Water elevator is no longer a strange concept in Minecraft. Especially nowadays when traveling in Minecraft just keeps getting better with time. People are lazy to take stairs, instead most Minecrafters prefer automated modes of transportation.

So, in this article, let’s see how to build a water elevator in Minecraft and explain how it works!

Minecraft water elevator: requirements

Depending on the size of the water lifter (1×1, 2×2, etc,…) you need different numbers of blocks. In this guide we will build a 1×1 water elevator because it is easy to build, takes less time to collect the resources and saves space.

You will need 1 Magma Block, 1 Soul Sand, 2 Buckets of Water, some Fence Gates, a few Stacks of Seaweed, and some Building Blocks. For a 1×2 water lifter you will need twice the amount of material and so on.

In order to get Magma Block and Soul Sand, you need to enter the Sub-Dimension. Magma blocks tend to spawn near the Lava Lake, and Soulsand can be found throughout the Nether, but mainly in the Soulsand Valley biome.

You can craft a Water Bucket from 3 Iron Ingots that you can get from a Mining Journey. The seaweed plant can be found in most ocean biomes. Just swim down and take a quick look! You will see a big green grass growing from the bottom of the sea.

You can make the fence gates from 2 wooden boards and 4 sticks.

What you need to build are two tubes filled with water source blocks. The soul sand block pushes you up, while the magma block pulls you down at high speed, making water travel much faster than normal ladder or stair climbing.

How to make a water elevator in Minecraft?

Let’s say you already have two floors and there are at least 4+ blocks high between them. Let’s build a water elevator!

#1 Build the Going Up Water Elevator

Pick a corner, dig in a block and dig out, and make your way to the second floor. Then place 2 fence gates directly on the outside of the ground floor. This is to prevent the water from running off later. When you’re done you’ll have something like this.

If you don’t have kelps, you’ll need to collect enough buckets of water to fill up every single block in this column. But if you have seaweed, all you have to do is put a bucket of water on the top block. Then let it flow down.

Next we will replace the bottom block of the pipe with a dirt block. Then plant the seaweed on top and keep planting the seaweed until you reach the top. The reason you need to do this is because planting kelp on running water turns them into a full water source block. When you’re done, you can break the seaweed on the bottom to destroy them all.

Remember to add 2 more fence gates on the second floor to prevent the water from coming out. Then jump to the first floor, break the block of earth and replace it with soul sand. You should see the bubbles flow up in a second.

#2 Do the Going Down Water Elevator

Using the same concept, you can create another elevator. This time, however, use Magma Block instead of the Soul Sand. This is how the magma pulls you down. It is recommended to build these 2 elevators close to each other so you can go up and down faster.

Congratulation! You have successfully built a water elevator in Minecraft!

frequently asked Questions

Which block makes the water rise?

Soul Sand causes the water to rise while Magma Block causes the water to sink. So keep that in mind!

Why doesn’t my soul sand bubble?

The reason soul sand doesn’t bubble is because there are some flowing water blocks in the elevator instead of a full water source block. Check it again and see if you find it. Otherwise you can replace all the water and do it again.
