How to make coloured eyeliner work for you

While colored eyeliner might not be on many desert island packing lists, for those in the know, it’s a makeup bag staple for myriad reasons.

Should you wish to experiment euphoria-style trends, pops of rainbow bright liner are the easiest route. Maybe you need a simple, chic evening look? A hint of conker brown or shimmering gray brings out smokey eyes in no time. Or, if you want to spice up your everyday makeup without too much fuss, a touch of indigo, olive green or auburn that lines the upper or lower lash line will do so instantly.

Indeed, colored eyeliner is a real makeup star, whether your mood is minimalist or maximalist, playful or sophisticated. Take it from Victoria Beckham, who is often seen in navy blue, silver or gold. “Just like in fashion, I like to play with color and finish to update my beauty wardrobe,” she says bazaar. That’s why she introduced her highly pigmented, smooth suede satin kajal liners to Victoria Beckham Beauty when the brand was founded in 2019.

The transformation one can achieve with colored eyeliner, she says, is essentially in line with “color theory,” and also notes that they’re the most versatile item in her own makeup bag, allowing her to achieve looks that enhance and amplify their colors to match their mood. Beckham and her team designed the liners with that perspective, she adds. “Sure, there’s a wide range of colors beyond black, but they’re all modern neutrals and meant to contrast and accentuate your eye color.”

Fast-forward to fall 2022, and Beckham has curated glittery versions. “Our Jewel collection is my take on mature shimmer,” she tells us. “Inspired by the intersection of glamor and grunge, each shade projects a stunning glow for the eyes that you can see at a party or across the room.” They impart a microscopic – yet distinctive – sparkle, that of mineral-based silica and embedded in the brand’s signature creamy texture. “I like to say these are statement shimmers with VB glamour.”

So how does she wear them? “During the day, I usually apply them one at a time and add them to the top of my lids for that glamorous but understated look,” she explains. However, when she goes for a smoky eye or an all-out statement, Beckham layers her over eyeshadow for added dimension.

Her favorite jewel liner is Gold Lamé, “a pure, eye-catching shade of gold,” which she says is a sophisticated accessory to any makeup look. Gold is one of those colors that goes with everything, she points out, “while also being the star of the show that makes everything else shine.” To finish off the look, “I always balance it out with a nude lip,” she adds.

If glittery gold seems too daring for you, Beckham recommends shimmering Night Flash for a sure-fire eyeliner update this upcoming party season. “It’s a slate black color contrasted with silver shimmer — an easy switch if you don’t want to stray too far from black.”

Perhaps the most wearable — and universally flattering — eyeliner shade, however, is brown. It’s ideal if you want to dip your toe into the colored liner look. “A rich brown is such an underrated neutral, and it’s perfect for that less dramatic but still impactful eye look,” says Beckham. “Cocoa really is a shade that not only suits all skin tones but also suits all eye colors.”
