How To Make Taylor Swift’s Chai Cookies For A ‘Midnights’ Recipe

The clock is officially ticking down to Taylor Swift’s tenth album midnight fall on October 21st and anticipation is at an all-time high. After so many surprises, easter eggs and theories leading up to the album, it’s best to trust that this won’t be a sleepless night – midnightnaturally calls for a long night. When you need some “sweet nothing” to keep you awake, an old cookie recipe Taylor once posted online is now going viral on TikTok. How to make Taylor Swift’s chai cookies for your Swiftie sleepover

ICYMI, Swifties on TikTok recently dug up an old Tumblr post where Swift posted the treats to Instagram and then posted a very special cookie recipe in response to a fan begging for the formula. It’s not every day that the singer’s attention gets caught, especially since she’s so private and only occasionally appears on social media. But, Taylor is Taylor, resurfaced briefly only to post a lengthy and detailed recipe for her favorite chai cookies, and captioned the post, “Cause the Bakers Gonna Bake Bake Bake Bake.” Now that TikTok is eating those cookies again, you can watch Swifties bake along Red (Taylor’s version) and get into the spirit of the season — Taylor release season, that is. In just a few days, you can showcase your candy creation along with their cozy new tracks like “Maroon” or “Midnight Rain.” You can even add your own twist to the recipe and title your video “The Version of (Your Name)”. Here’s the official recipe, penned by the Autumn Queen herself.

How to make Taylor Swift’s chai cookies

“MMMKAY – there are two ways you can go about it,” Swift began her original Tumblr post. The first recipe variation is super easy to make when you’re dreaming of something sweet but are too exhausted to start over. She says you can just use store-bought sugar cookie mix and pour a packet of chai tea into the batter before baking. “Phew. Done.” The second way to make the chai sugar cookies is based on a vanilla sugar cookie recipe posted by Joy The Baker from The Pastry Queen cookbook, which Swift modified with specific details to make that to make dessert more festive. She served up these treats back in the fall of 2014 at “Secret Sessions” (private listening parties for select Swifties) for the 1989 Album so you know these cookies are tried and true Swiftie-themed party treats. For Taylor’s version (pun intended), she wrote, “I added the chai element to the recipe because I thought it would give the cookie a cozy holiday vibe, and it really did.”

Ingredients for Taylor Swift Chai Sugar Cookies:

  • 1/2 cup (or stick) butter, room temperature
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar plus extra for sprinkling
  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract or the seeds of 1 vanilla bean
  • 1 packet of crushed chai tea leaves
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

How to make the cookies:

  1. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Using a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, in a large bowl, beat the butter for about a minute. Next, beat in vegetable oil, granulated sugar, powdered sugar, egg, and vanilla on medium speed.
  3. Empty the packet of shredded chai leaves into the batter and mix until evenly combined.
  4. On slow speed or with a wooden spoon, fold in the flour, baking powder, and salt to complete the soft cookie dough.
  5. Chill the dough in the fridge for 1 hour or in the freezer for 15 minutes to make it easier to roll out and shape into biscuits.
  6. Using 1-2 tablespoons, scoop balls of dough onto the baking sheet and press down to form thick cookies.
  7. Sprinkle some granulated sugar over the cookies for a caramelized crust.
  8. Bake in the oven for 8-14 minutes depending on thickness and allow to cool for at least 10 minutes before glazing.

Eggnog Glaze Ingredients:

  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon plus extra for sprinkling
  • 3 tablespoons milk or eggnog

How to make eggnog icing and complete the cookies:

  1. In a medium bowl, whisk the ingredients together until a smooth glaze forms. The more milk or eggnog you add, the more runny the frosting becomes (“But frostings are real, too, so just live your life,” Taylor wrote).
  2. “If you really feel like living on the edge, you can add a few drops of food coloring to the frosting to make it festive,” Swift wrote in the post. “No one will stop you.”
  3. Use a spoon to spread the icing on each of the chai cookies. Sprinkle with cinnamon and enjoy.

These cookies are perfect for enjoying throughout the holiday season, with warm spices and sweet creamy frosting that are sure to be a crowd favorite even outside of the sacred Swiftie circles. But if you throw one midnight Release party with your friends, or staying home alone to walk the hallways while listening intently to Swift’s haunting lyrics, you’ve got to bake these treats in case you need some sweet relief from all the excitement. After all, cookies are a classic midnight snack.
