What you need to pack a bowl
Packing a bowl is the first thing you need when you want to smoke. So let’s spend a quick minute diving into everything you need to pack a bowl and smoke properly.
Ever wondered why weed is purple but too scared to ask? we got you
cannabis
This is obvious, but you need some flower if you want to smoke. It all comes down to choosing the right strain for what you’re after, but we’ll cover that in a minute.
A grinder (optional)
There’s no need to invest in an expensive grinder for your weed when you’re just learning how to pack your first bowl. You can always use your fingers to push your buds apart and break them open so they fit snugly in your headpiece.
But unlike the weed that you manually shred, using a grinder keeps the weed consistent and enjoyable. Not only does this help pack a better bowl, but it also helps the weed burn a little slower and more evenly, so you can enjoy it for a longer period of time.
A pipe or bong with a bowl
Surely you also need something to smoke now. The most common types of smoking are pipes or bongs, but many other options are available as well.
Just make sure you have something official to smoke out of and don’t rely on last minute pop cans or apples like we all did in college. It’s the twenty-first century, and you shouldn’t have to resort to such barbaric methods to get stoned.

A lighter or hemp wick
The last thing you need is something to light your bowl with. It can be a lighter, a candle, a match or whatever; As long as it can cause a flame, you must smoke the bowl.
A tamping tool (optional)
This is optional, but packing a little tighter will greatly improve the smoking experience. As mentioned in the grinder section, tamping tools help fill the bowl more evenly and tightly, resulting in a smoother overall smoking experience.
And they’re usually only a few dollars at a local head shop or pharmacy. So there’s no point in skipping it the next time you want to pack the perfect bowl.

In order to have a good time smoking weed, it’s important to know how to pack a bowl properly. Packing too tight can cause problems, while packing too loose can result in all of your weed being blown away. The smoothness of the smoke also depends on how well packed the bowl is.
Choose your variety
The first step is choosing the right strain.
This depends on the high you want. Do you want to curl up on the couch for a late night playing Elden Ring, or do you want to grab your longboard and cruise down Main Street? Each strain has a different desired effect, and choosing the right strain for the job should be a top priority.
Tip: If you want a daytime high, go for sativa. If you want to relax in the evenings, Indica might be a better option. Some buds are stickier than others and some are denser. All this also plays a role when packing the bowl.
grind the grass
If you want to ensure an even smoke when smoking cannabis, it’s important to grind the nuggets into small pieces that are all roughly the same size. The best way to do this is with a grinder. When using your grinder, place small or medium sized nubs on the side of the grinder where the teeth are.
These teeth will shred and crush the larger buds, breaking them down into the finely ground weed you need to pack the pipe or bong. Put the cap back on the grinder and twist and turn the cap so the teeth start to grind the weed.

If you don’t have a grinder nearby, you can use your hands, sharp scissors, or a fine knife to chop the buds into equal-sized pieces. This method isn’t ideal, but it’s something you must do, you must do.
Tip: If you’re shopping for a grinder, try to find one with a collection bin at the bottom to catch the dust that falls off the nuggets as you grind the bud. This precious dust is called keef and can be collected and stored to sprinkle on future heads to increase the amount of THC you smoke.
Pack the bowl
Once you’ve ground the cannabis, gently scoop a small amount of weed between your emails. Place it in the bowl and gently press down with your finger, the flat end of a lighter, or a tamper. Don’t pack it too tight. Otherwise you will have trouble drawing the smoke through your head and into the pipe. Overloading the bowl can also clog the hole at the bottom.
So how much weed should you put in a bowl for the perfect hit? It differs from person to person depending on your needs and preferences. I can’t give you an exact amount, but here are a few quick tips to help you pack the perfect bowl every time.
- If you want less intense hits, fill your bowl about 30% full.
- Fill your bowl up to 60% for an incredible high.
- Fill your head to the brim for more significant, powerful hits.
Tip: Use a tamper tool to pack the head firmly and evenly to ensure a slow-burn hit that lasts longer and hits harder.
smoke
To smoke a pipe, hold it in one hand with your thumb or finger over the carb hole. Put the pipe to your lips and light a corner of the head with your other hand.
Once the weed is sparkling, remove the flame and start inhaling gently. When you’re ready to inhale fully, lift your thumb off the carb and take a definite drag. All of the smoke in the pipe will now go into your lungs. Congratulations, you just finished your smoking session! But there is still one step left…
Ash and clean your bowl
When you’ve finished smoking and been able to relax, clean all your smoking devices; The resin and terpins can build up on the bowl and clog it up for future uses.
So make sure it’s clean, clear, and ready to use so you don’t have to remove the cakey sap when it’s your turn tomorrow (or maybe in a few hours).
