How to stream your Nest security cameras to your TV using a Google Chromecast

You’re sitting on the couch watching the latest episode of Bluish with your offspring when the doorbell rings or you hear a noise from the children’s room. If you’ve got a Google Chromecast connected to your TV, you don’t have to whip out your phone or crane your neck to see Nest Hub’s smart display in the kitchen — you can just ask Google to give you a live feed of your doorbell or to show security camera directly on the TV.

Any compatible security camera from Nest, Arlo, Wyze, Eufy, Netatmo, TP-Link Kasa and more can be live streamed to the big screen with any generation of Chromecast. And as of last month, you can now stream the newer Nest Cams as well, as long as you have a Chromecast with Google TV. Here’s a full list of Nest cameras you can stream:

Once you have your cameras and Chromecast set up, you can easily stream this live feed to your TV. Just make sure your camera and Chromecast are on the same WiFi network. (If you initially set it up with the Google Home app, you should be good to go.) Then follow these steps.

Link your TV to Chromecast with the Google Home app

First you need to make sure your Chromecast is linked to the same account as your smartphone or tablet.

  • Open the Home app on your smartphone.
  • Find the tile for your Chromecast – it’s under the room you placed it in during setup.
  • Touch and hold the tile.
  • press the settings icon in the upper right corner.
  • Beat Recognition & Sharing.
  • If your device isn’t linked, you’ll see a banner at the top of the page that says Activate voice control and more.
  • Tap on it and follow the steps to link your Chromecast to your Google Home.
  • If your device is already linked, the banner will not be there and your email address should appear below it connected accounts)indicating that your TV is already connected.

Display your video doorbell or security camera on your TV

You can display a live feed from any compatible security camera or video doorbell directly on your TV simply by using your voice.

  • Say “OK, Google” or “Hey, Google” followed by “show [camera name] on [TV or Chromecast device name]” to a Nest smart speaker or display, or to the Google Assistant on your phone or tablet.
  • If you have a Chromecast with Google TV, press and hold the Assistant button on the voice remote and say the wake-up phrase “OK, Google” or “Hey, Google” followed by “show.” [camera name].”
  • To stop the feed, say “Stop [TV or Chromecast device name]’ or press the Home button on the Chromecast with Google TV Voice Remote.
