How to switch your Quest from a Facebook account to a Meta account

If you’ve bought a Meta (formerly known as the Oculus) Quest or Quest 2 virtual reality headset in the past few years, you’ve probably had to set it up with a Facebook account. While this makes sense since the device is made by Meta, Facebook’s parent company, there are some potential downsides to having your Facebook account and Quest linked. For example, if your account is suspended due to an incident on Facebook, you may lose access to the games you’ve purchased for Oculus.

Luckily, Meta recently started rolling out a new account type that lets you log into your Oculus so you can de-link your Quest from your Facebook profile. They’re called meta accounts, and it’s relatively easy to switch to a quest that already has a Facebook account set up with the following steps.

How to create a meta account

Of course you need a meta account if you want to use it with your Quest. Go to meta.com/websetup on either your phone or a computer to set it up. If you are not already logged in to Facebook, you must do so before proceeding. Since all of your apps and game data are currently associated with your Facebook account, they will need to be transferred to your new meta account.

Next, the setup process will ask you if you want to set up your meta account with Facebook or with an email address. If you choose to set up with Facebook, you’ll link your Meta and Facebook accounts, which gives you access to some social features and lets you log into your Meta account through Facebook. If you continue without Facebook, you will need to use an email address and password to log in to your meta account.

You don’t need to link your Facebook and Meta accounts other than porting your data if you don’t want to.

No decision is permanent. If you set up your Meta account without Facebook, you can always link and unlink your accounts later if you choose to set up with Facebook.

If you continue without Facebook, you may be prompted to enter your email address if one is not already associated with your account. If so, Meta will likely email you with a verification code. After you set up your email address and password, you must choose a privacy preference for your Horizon account that determines who can see your activity, active status, and who can follow you.

Connecting your meta account and headset is pretty much a one-step process.

How to link your Quest and Meta accounts

Once you’ve done that, put on your headset. If you try to do something with it, you should see a prompt with a code to connect your headset to an account. On the device you used to set up your Meta account, go to Meta.com/device and enter the passcode from your Oculus. This will connect your meta account to your headset, and you should still be able to use it as before – just with your meta account instead of a Facebook account.

Here’s how to sign back into the Oculus app

If you paired your Quest with the Oculus app for iOS or Android, you may have signed out of the app when switching to a meta account. However, getting back in is fairly easy. Make sure you’ve updated to the latest version of the app, then select the Sign up with email option on the login screen. Then enter the email address and password you set up for your meta account. You should go back to using the app as before.
