How to track your sleep on a Garmin watch

If you want to keep track of your sleep, here’s how to do it with the help of a Garmin watch on your wrist.

One element of staying in good health is getting a decent night’s sleep. If you want to keep a closer eye on this, including the different stages of sleep, your breathing pattern, how often you wake up during the night, or other indicators of your overall sleep quality, a Garmin watch can be a very useful tracker.

Sleep tracking turns on automatically when you wear a fully set up and paired Garmin watch. In this manual, this process is therefore only explained.

What you will need:

The short version

  • You can set your normal sleep times in the Garmin Connect app
  • Sleep should be tracked automatically when you wear the watch
  • You can then monitor your sleep quality in the Garmin Connect app or on the watch itself

How to track your sleep on a Garmin watch: step by step

  1. Step
    1

You can set your normal sleep times in the Garmin Connect app

Upon launch, you’ll likely be prompted to set your typical sleep times on your watch. If not, you can set this in the Garmin Connect app by tapping the three dashes icon in the top left, then Settings, then User Settings and scrolling down to Sleep Settings. This step isn’t strictly necessary for sleep tracking, but it won’t bother you with notifications during this time.

  2. Step
    2

Sleep should be tracked automatically when you wear the watch

When you fall asleep with your watch on, it should automatically detect that you’re sleeping and start logging the quality of your sleep without input. You don’t have to click anything, select anything, or select a routine for this to take effect.

  3. Step
    3

You can then monitor your sleep quality in the Garmin Connect app or on the watch itself

Once you wake up, you can view your sleep quality either on the watch or, if you want more detail, on the Garmin Connect mobile app.

Troubleshooting

What should I do if I have serious problems with my sleep?

While the Garmin Connect app can provide some advice and prompts about your sleep, if your sleep is a serious concern you should see a doctor.

Why isn’t my sleep tracking showing what I expected?

There are a few explanations for this; ether your sleep pattern is just different than your perception, which is why wearables can be very useful sources of information; or the tracker is inaccurate, which can sometimes happen. While we’ve had positive experiences with Garmin devices, you should always treat your watch’s records with caution and use common sense when interpreting the results.
