How to Upgrade PS4 Games to Their PS5 Versions

Sony’s PS5 comes with several features, including backwards compatibility, which will allow you to play PS4 games on your new console. But did you know that you can also upgrade some PS4 games to their PS5 versions to take advantage of the PS5’s upgraded hardware?

That means you can enjoy your favorite games with better graphics and a smoother gaming experience. Here’s how to update your eligible games to their PS5 versions.

How to tell if your PS4 game has a PS5 upgrade

However, you should note that not every PS4 game has a PS5 upgrade available. The list of PS4 games that can be upgraded to PS5 versions is growing, but some of the most popular titles are already available.

These include Cyberpunk 2077, Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut, and Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales to name a few. You can check if your game is eligible for a PS5 upgrade on this list on PlayStation Store.

Alternatively, if you purchased the game digitally through the PlayStation Store, log into your PlayStation account on your PS5 (the same one you used to purchase the PS4 game) and go to your Game tab..

There you will find the games that you have downloaded to your console. Hover your cursor over the tile of the game you want to review and tap on it “…” icon through the playing game Possibility. If the game has a PS5 upgrade, you’ll see Select version as part of the options.

You can also update an eligible game if you have purchased the disc version and inserted it into your PS5. However, this means that you must have the standard PS5 with a disc drive and keep the PS4 game disc inserted into your console every time you wish to play the game.

Eventually, you’ll find that some games offer free upgrades, while others are only available in cross-gen bundles, special editions, or as part of a paid upgrade. This means some PS4 game versions are cheaper than their PS5 or cross-gen bundle counterparts.

This is why you should check prices before upgrading PS4 games. For example, the PS4 version of Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War costs $59.99, while the cross-gen bundle, which includes both PS4 and PS5 versions, costs $69.99.
