How to Use Emergency SOS via Satellite on iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Pro [VIDEO] • iPhone in Canada Blog

Apple has released a new video tutorial on its Apple support YouTube channel explaining how to use the new Satellite Emergency SOS feature on the recently released iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro.

This year’s entire iPhone lineup introduces Apple’s long-rumoured emergency satellite SOS feature, which allows users to send emergency texts even when cell towers aren’t around.

The feature is scheduled to roll out in the US and Canada in November. It will be available free of charge for two years with the activation of any compatible product.

“Starting November with iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro and iOS 16.1, you’ll have the option to use a satellite connection to reach an emergency service provider instead,” Apple said in the support video.

If you’re making an emergency call on iPhone 14 and don’t have a cellular or Wi-Fi connection, you have the option of sending an SOS signal via satellite instead. From then on you must:

1. Tap on Emergency call via satellite.
2. Provide information about your situation using the on-screen prompts.
3. Follow your iPhone’s instructions to connect to a satellite.
   Note: You need a clear view of the sky on the horizon to get a satellite lock and it doesn’t work indoors. Apple also warns that the connection can be blocked by tall buildings, mountains, thick foliage, or other objects.
4. With your iPhone’s guidance, follow the satellite as it moves to stay connected.
5. Apple says it will automatically connect you to the right emergency service provider. You can send a text message (back and forth) to the provider or to an emergency call center that will contact an emergency service provider directly.

Apple warned that sending and receiving texts via satellite can take some time, so it’s best to keep them as short as possible.

When you’re connected to an emergency service provider or relay center, information about your situation, your location, and your iPhone battery level is shared with them. So does the medical ID once you set it up.

If you lose satellite coverage, your iPhone will tell you how long it will be before the next satellite is available. “Get help when and where you need it with Emergency SOS via Satellite,” Apple said in the video.

Apple started pre-orders for the iPhone 14 in Canada on Friday, and you can order your iPhone 14 today at Apple.ca. However, the delivery estimates for the iPhone 14 Pro have already slipped into November.
