What is the dual camera feature in Instagram Stories?
Instagram announced some new features in July 2022, including the dual camera feature. The feature allows you to take a picture with your phone’s front and rear cameras at the same time. In the upper right corner you will see a small box with the front camera image, while the rest of the screen shows the rear camera image.
The feature is only available on the mobile app, making it another difference between the Instagram desktop app and the mobile app.
Instagram rolled out this feature in early 2022 in response to the growing popularity of social media app BeReal. BeReal sends out a notification once a day so users can take a picture with the front and back cameras at the same time to show what they were doing at that moment.
The Instagram Dual Camera feature looks a lot like a BeReal post. Instagram is also testing Candid Challenges, which mimic BeReal’s spontaneous notification prompts.
Competition-inspired features are not without controversy, however. Users are demanding that Instagram go back to its roots instead of mimicking competitors with features like TikTok-inspired reels.
But others welcome more diversity in the types of content on Instagram.
How to use Instagram dual camera feature
To find the dual camera feature, follow these steps:
- Open the Instagram app and tap plus icon on your profile picture to create a new story.
- Then select the camera icon. You will see that your camera is open to take a photo for your Instagram story. Tap the arrow icon to view and select various camera functions dual.
- You will see the small rectangle with the preview of your front camera.
- Tap and drag the front camera image to move it anywhere on the screen.
- Tap the camera icon to take your picture.
