Bellator’s deepest division will open the promotion’s latest Grand Prix with a bang. The lightweight title Bellator is at stake in the SAP Center. Two battles will decide who advances for a shot at gold and $1 million.
In the main event on March 10, Usman Nurmagomedov will defend his lightweight belt against former MMA champion Benson Henderson.
The cousin of former UFC champion Khabib Nurmagomedov, Nurmagomedov started his career in Russia in 2017. Since going from featherweight to lightweight, he has won 12-0. Nurmagomedov joined Bellator in 2021, beating Grand Prix-competing Paricky Freire for the Bellator Lightweight title.
With Henderson stepping up in the competition, Nurmogomedov is ready for the opportunity to showcase his skills on a bright stage. A win would give him all the momentum in Grand Prix.

“I don’t really care because in the end I have to get through them all anyway,” said Nurmagomedov. “Benson is a great opponent because he’s a great fighter with a great legacy, so beating him first will be a great leg for me. It’s a great start because it’s very well known. That will do my CV good.”
A jiu-jitsu specialist and two-time NAIA All-American, Henderson turned pro in 2006. Henderson won WEC and UFC lightweight golds and defended the UFC belt three times. He beat Clay Guida, Frankie Edgar and Nate Diaz. Henderson joined Bellator in 2016 and is 7-6 with the promotion. After skidding in three fights, Henderson bounced back with two straight wins. Henderson’s last fight was a unanimous decision win over Peter Queally.
At 39, Henderson knows time is almost up. He is ready to hang up the gloves after this Grand Prix and focus on his wife Maria’s fighting career. The underdog Henderson is only focused on the task at hand.
“I’ve never looked at that in my life [betting] Opportunities,” said Henderson. “I don’t even know how quotas work. I don’t pay attention to that. But I get the underdog thing. I’ve been the underdog for much of my career. People remember when I was champion and I was the favorite in those fights, but before that I was the underdog for a long time. I have no problem being the underdog. It’s a struggle: it doesn’t matter to true veterans. it’s a fight All the other minor things – the home crowd, the strikes, this and that – don’t matter.”
The co-main event is another quarterfinal match between Tofiq Musayev and Alexandr Shabliy.
