Mahomes is currently in his fifth season as the Chiefs’ starting quarterback. In an interview with NBC’s Maria Taylor for Football Night in America, Mahomes discusses the hallmarks of a Brady-led team.
“First, they exploit bugs,” Mahomes said. “If you make a mistake on the field, if I throw an interception or if you fumble or something like that happens, he’ll make you pay and get points on the board and then he’ll run the game.”
Mahomes also knows that while Brady has a knack for capitalizing on mistakes, he doesn’t often make his own.
“He’ll make some plays when he needs to make plays, but at the same time he’s not going to make that big mistake. So you have to go out and play a near-perfect soccer match to win. Another thing is he’s never out of the game and I think that’s something I try to boast about never being out of the game too. So if you’re playing against a team run by Tom Brady, make sure you keep your foot on the pedal and try to do whatever it takes to complete the game.
Patrick Mahomes takes on Tom Brady’s lessons
Despite the difference in age and experience, Brady and Mahomes have equal impact on the game.
“You don’t want to like Tom, but he’s just the best guy,” Mahomes said. “So it’s hard not to like him but to be able to play in golf tournaments and he gives me any advice and stuff like that. I mean he’s the GOAT. You want to learn from the best and it’s really cool to have that relationship with him.”
Even if Brady and Mahomes have gone head-to-head in post-season high-stakes games, the advice continues. The two met in the 2019 AFC Championship game when Brady was still playing for the New England Patriots. Both quarterbacks put on excellent performances, but Brady managed to lead the Patriots to an overtime win.
After that loss, Mahomes tells Taylor that he’s upset and spends a lot of time sitting in the dressing room after the game. But when Mahomes finally walks out, Brady is waiting for him.
“He could celebrate,” Mahomes said. “He goes to the Super Bowl and stuff, and everything he said to me, ‘Hey, just keep doing what you’re doing. You’re doing it right.” And as a young quarterback, you just go out and play and try to have fun and do whatever it takes to put your team in the best position to win.
But when the GOAT says this, it says you’re doing it right, it shows you that you’re doing it right. And that was big for me.”
While Brady Mahomes has yet to reveal all his football wisdom, the Chiefs signal caller is excited to learn more.
“He’s not going to tell me all the secrets just yet,” Mahomes said. “But hopefully one day I can figure out the secrets and put them into my game.”

While Brady and Mahomes are competitors, their mutual respect extends beyond the football field into their personal lives. Mahomes and his wife Brittany have a young girl, Sterling, and are expecting a baby boy.
“You want to be a family man and be able to be with your family and do these different things where you go into business and then you help out and do commercials and at the same time keep football first.”
One of the biggest lessons Mahomes learned from Brady is the importance of prioritizing football and constantly improving in the game.
“That’s the greatness of Tom Brady, no matter how much he does off the field, football is always his top priority and he makes sure it stays that way,” Mahomes said. “And so you watch that and then at the same time go back to him on the field and he just keeps getting better. I feel like every year he finds something to get better at. And that’s what I want to do, I want to keep getting better as my career progresses so hopefully I can play, maybe not as long as him, but also quite a long time.
