Halloween ends is the third and final film in the Halloween Sequel trilogy that started in 2018 Halloween and continued in 2021 with its sequel, Halloween kills. The trilogy is a sequel to the 1978s Halloween, which was about Michael Myers, a patient in a mental institution who was admitted at the age of six on Halloween night for the murder of his teenage sister who was babysitting. The film takes place 15 years after the murder, when Michael escapes from the mental hospital and returns to his hometown of Haddonfield, Illinois, where he stalks teenage babysitter Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis) and her friends on Halloween night .
That Halloween The sequel trilogy takes place 40 years after the original Halloween when Michael returns to Haddonfield and meets Laurie one last time. Halloween ends— marking the final appearances of Curtis and Nick Castle as Laurie Strodes and Michael Myers — concludes the trilogy. “The common understanding of Laurie Strode is that as that original ‘last girl,’ she never gave up and always pushed through, no matter what. It’s incredible that this is my legacy,” Curtis told Variety in 2022. “I feel like I didn’t give up, that I kept trying, but not on Laurie Strode’s level.”
She continued, “What I got from her is way more than she got from me. Because when I’m gone, her legacy will become mine. Now, of course, I have my children and this is my life and that is crucial. But in the movies, she’s my legacy, and I couldn’t be prouder of any legacy — unless it’s like Mother Teresa or, you know, a big big Nelson Mandela or something — but in a movie character, you couldn’t say I’d rather be than Laurie Strode.”

In an interview with AV Club, director David Gordon Green explained that he didn’t have a big plan for it Halloween ends would complete the franchise. “There was a plan of essence. But I don’t necessarily know a plan until I’m on set and we really get into things no matter how much rehearsing or writing. It’s still a vague tapestry until we start really getting into it and weaving it together. So after the success of our 2018 film, we had a vague idea of where we wanted to go,” he said. “And I knew I wanted the second film to be around a lot more action and aggression. And then I wanted the third film to be a love story that felt more grounded and intimate. And those were always essential ingredients, and then you tried to figure out how to tell the story of the manifestation of evil.”
He continued: “The second is a big exploitation film by Michael Meyer – that to me is Halloween Kills, the opera by Michael Myers. And second, you’re not going to delve into Michael Myers’ backstory, because as far as I’m concerned, that’s off-limits territory. I don’t want to know his motivation, what drives him. But I ask many questions about the evil and community that is left after the Haddonfield massacres. So try to find a way to ask these questions but don’t [doing that] Through Michael Myers, I insisted that I bring in a new character to provide perspective on Michael and his behavior, Laurie and her insights, and then Haddonfield as a whole.”
He also explained how he wanted that Halloween Trilogy ends for Laurie. “I don’t think the Laurie Strode I want to follow will ever be 100 percent settled in any way as to how the story might play out for her. I felt passionate that we want a story that explores their struggles and their reflections,” he said. “And so I feel like wherever this film would take you, whatever journey, there’s a thoughtfulness. And there will never be an absolutely final, tragic ending, and there will never be an absolutely final, happy ending. I think it’s a series of tragic events piling up in her psyche. And at the end of the day, as we all should when we are going through hardships and facing difficulties, the thoughtfulness, the reflection, the development beyond that is what I think is the most interesting thing.”
Green also told AV Club why he decided to do a Halloween sequel instead of a remake in 2018. “This is a really fun question and conversation — it’s a big conversation. Because the original Halloween has inspired so many people, and so many people have ripped off ideas or imitated them to the point of cliché or camp. Personally, I like to choose which tropes I invite in when it’s too little or too much,” he said. “Turning your back on a villain about to pick up a knife? I’m not sure you’re getting as much out of it as you used to be able to do without the groans of the audience. I think a bit of tempo is needed for a contemporary audience that might have as much patience as they did 44 years ago.”
He continued, “And so we make certain stylistic choices, but all of that is certainly in the appreciation of John [Carpenter] and having him there as an advisor and collaborator helps me when I get a little off track. Sometimes I have a wild idea and I’m like, ‘That’s a little wild John, but what if?’ And he’ll either say, “That’s a terrible idea” or “That’s interesting. See where it takes you.’”
