Who was Mamie Till?
Born in Mississippi in 1921, Mamie Till moved to Illinois as a child during the Great Migration, where she met her first husband, Louis Till. Louis was a charismatic amateur boxer, and despite the concerns of Mamie’s parents, the couple married in 1940 when they were both 18 years old. Exactly nine months after the wedding, the couple welcomed their son Emmett. In 1942, the couple separated after Mamie learned that her husband had been unfaithful. Louis became violent and Mamie was granted a restraining order against him, which he repeatedly violated. In response, a judge told Louis he would either see jail time or enlist in the US Army. He enlisted in the army in 1943, and two years later Mamie received news that her husband had been executed in Italy for “willful misconduct”. Mamie’s inquiries into the details of his murder were unfounded for nearly 10 years. She finally learned the reason for his execution – he and an accomplice were accused of raping an Italian woman and sentenced to death by hanging.
What happened to Emmett Till?
In 1955, Mamie Till’s only son, Emmett, was sent to Money, Mississippi to visit his family. On August 28, 1955, just a week after arriving in the state, the 14-year-old boy was accused of referencing a white woman at a grocery store; although the details of this interaction are very controversial. Days later, Till was kidnapped from his home, tortured and lynched, and yet his killers were acquitted.
After his murder, Mamie Till insisted on holding an open-coffin funeral, saying, “I wanted the world to see what they did to my baby.” Emmett’s body was seen not just by funeral attendees, but by the whole nation. Photos of the brutally murdered boy circulated across the country, and the Till case became a pivotal moment in the struggle for civil rights in America.
